  1. Edward1, the ancestor of all who have borne this surname in Hing. and vicinity, had his first grant of land here, containing ten acres, the 8th of Oct. 1637, "in a place as convenient as can be discovered." He subsequently received other grants from the town, including a track situated next to that given to his mother, the wid. Martha Wilder,* in 1638, which was located at or near the junction of main and Pleasant Sts., and inc. the est. now owned by heirs of Fearing Loring, deceased. He also owned all the land between Tower's Bridge and Wilder's Bridge, and, without doubt, was one of the earlier planters of this locality. His w., whom he prob. m. ab. 1650, was Elizabeth, dau. of Anthony Eames, Senr, of Mf'd. She outlived him, and d. 9 June, 1692. He d. intestate 18 Oct. 1690, having been stricken suddenly with malignant fever. Elizabeth, his wid., and s. Jabez were appointed adm's. "Farmer." Freeman 29 May, 1644, and in 1667 selectman. Dec. 1, 1675, he was one of the sixteen "Hingham soldiers impressed into the country service." at the outbreak of Philip's War. He resided on Main, between High and Friend Sts., on the est. purchased of Samuel Ward.

                     betwixt Israel Fearing, Isaac Wilder, Jabez Wilder, and myself, I give to my beloved
                     brothers Isaac, Israel, and Jabez, to be equally divided between them. I give to
                     my brother Jabez all my lands and rights in Hingham and Scituate, as also that part of
                     my land at Accord Pond.". Est. appraised at 429  8s.

       *Wid. Martha Wilder was an inhabitant of Hing. as early as 1638, when she had a grant of five acres of land for a house-lot on Main, near Pleasant St.,; also other lots at subsequent dates of planting, pasture, and meadow lands. She prob. came from Shiplock, Oxfordshire County, Eng., with her dau. Mary, and perh. Eliza, who m. Jan. 17, 1638 or 1638-39, Thomas Ensign of Scit. It may have been her dau. Mary who m. ---- Cudworth of Scit. Wid. Martha Wilder d. in Hing. 20 Apr. 1652.


  2. John2 (Edward1), b. prob. in Hing. ab. 1653, m. Nov. 30, 1675, Rebecca Doggett. She d. 4 Oct. 1728, at the age of 72 yrs. He d. 11 Apr. 1724, at the age of 70 yrs. In his will made 11 Sept. 1708, mentions and provides for w. Rebecca, gives "to son Ephraim that part of my estate which fell to me at my father's decease, lying at the northwest of my father's homestead now in the possession of my brother Jabez Wilder, and bounded northerly by Benjamin Tower; westerly towards the common lands, and southerly by Jabez Wilder; to son Isaac my house, barn, pasture, orchard, and land adjoining; to my daughter Elizabeth Sprague 6, in addition to what she has already had; to daughters Harriet [Hannah] Wilder, Rebecca Wilder, and Mary Wilder 29 each," etc. "Farmer." Constable 1691, and 1692. Resided on Main St., So. Hing.

Apr. 29, 1664, and surviving him, m. secondly, Baruch Jordan, whom she outlived, and for her third hus. m. May 21, 1713, Thomas Sayer, Senior, widower. Isaac d. 6 Sept. 1690, at about the age of 34 yrs. Est. appraised at 174  8s. Resided on Main, near Free St., So. Hing.

  4. Jabez2 (Edward1), b. in Hing. March, 1657-58, m. Mary Ford of Mf'd. She was b. at Mf'd May 16, 1671, and d. in Hing. 1 Feb. 1747-48, at the age of 77 yrs. He d. 24 May, 1731, at the age of 73 yrs. "Farmer." Constable 1687, and 1700. Resided on the paternal homestead, Main St., So. Hing. In his will of 5 June, 1728, proved 29 June, 1731, gives "to my wife Mary the use and improvement of 1/3 of my estate, both real and personal, during her natural life. To son Jabez the new dwelling-house on the side of the highway at South Hingham;" mentions a black oak-tree "standing ont he boundary line between Ephraim's homestead and mine;" bequeaths also "to sons Edward and Theophilus, and to daughters Mary Slaughter [Slader], Sarah Loring, Leah Wilder, and Kezia Wilder, each 100." The inv. of his est. appraised Aug. 12, 1731, includes in a long list of personal property, books, arms, gold plate, hour-glass, side-saddle, pillion, 7 sdp (?) of bees, loom, and weaving-tackle, 7 oxen, 6 cows, 3 steers three-yr.-old, 6 fat cattle, 2 two-yr.-olds, 4 of one yr. old, 5 calves, 32 sheep, 1 horse, 1 mare, swine, etc.

Jabez inherited the est. of his uncle Jabez, and resided on Free, near Main St., until he sold to Thomas Fearing, and removed to Chesterfield, Mass. He was one of the constables of Hing. 1761 and 1765, and capt. of a military company in the War of the Revolution.
