Where did the Alfred Iles story come from? In August 2000, Jeff Christlieb, the husband of Alfred's second great grandniece Cindy Christlieb, found Ceclia "Babe" Gensheer in Durango, Colorado. Mrs. Gensheer was a step granddaughter to Alfred. When Alfred died in 1942, Mrs. Gensheer, being a young woman at the time, asked if she could have Alfred's photos, scrapbook, and memoirs, and since nobody else wanted them in the family, they were given to her. Fifty-eight years later, Mrs. Gensheer would pass on Alfred's legacy to the Christlieb family, and you can read his story here. In August 2001, the Christlieb family donated the Alfred Iles collection to the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Alfred Iles was born to William Iles and Eliza Willsher in 1855. They had the following children: George 1847-1921 All of the children have been accounted for except Walter and Alice. Family stories have said they may have been adopted by other famlies in England, or may have died at a very young age, as there is no mention of them coming to America with the rest of the family in 1871. Alfred Iles would come to America in 1875 after being discharged from the Royal Navy. |
