THE BASKINS-BASKIN FAMILY - Raymond Martin Bell
PICKENS (S.C.)
The Pickens were neighbors of the Baskins in Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina. William Baskin bought land in Virginia from John Pickens. Andrew and Nancy Pickens moved from Ireland to Pennsylvania. Andrew, Jr. was born Sept. 19, 1739 near Paxton. He lived later in Augusta Co., Virginia, and Long Cane, S.C. In 1765 he married Rebecca, daughter of Ezekiel Calhoun. He was a general in the Revolution. Andrew, Jr. died August 11, 1817.
CRAIG (Va.)
-----John Craig was born Aug 17, 1709 in Donegore Parish, Co. Antrim, Ireland. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh. On August 17, 1734 he landed at new Castle, Delaware. On august 20, 1738 he was licensed to preach by the Donegal (Pa.) Presbytery. In 1739 he was sent to Virginia as a supply. In April 1740 he received a call from the congregations at Augusta and Tinkling Springs Churches in Augusta Co, VA. On Sept. 3, 1740 he was ordained as minister and spent the rest of his life there. He died Apr. 21, 1774 and is buried at Augusta Church. Augusta (Old Stone) Church is 8 miles northeast of Staunton. Tinkling Spring is 5 miles southeast of Staunton. On June 11, 1744 he married in Penna, Isabella Hellena Russell, daughter of George Russell. The had one son, George and five daughters who gre to maturity; Mary (1746-1816) m Charles Baskin, Patience (1752-1822) m William Hamilton, Johanna m John Hamilton, daughter m Atwater, another daughter. John Craig in 1741, 1743, 1745 baptized Charles, Hugh, and Elizabeth Baskin the younger children of William Sr. Charles Baskin is buried at Tinkling Springs Cemetery.
