Article from Palladium-Item; Richmond, IN., 25 Feb 1976:

"'189-Year-Old Family Melodeon in Eastman Home'
A melodeon putchased in New York City in 1787 sets in the Niewoehner Road living room of Dr. and Mrs. Howard Eastman. Mrs Eastman is the great-great-granddaughter of the original owner.
Had it not been for the fast thinking of Mrs. Eastman's father, George Ebenezer Borden, who resides with her, the melodeon would have gone up in flames in 1909 when Borden's home was leveled due to an overheated stove.
'The melodeon always stood by the front door,' Mr. Borden said, 'and when the house caught fire, my grandmother and I were the only ones at home. I was 12 years old at the time. As I went out the froont door, I picked up the melodeon and took it out with me. It was about the only thing that was salvaged out of the house'
The rosewood melodeon has made its rounds throughout the United States, according to Borden.
The history of the melodeon, written on a yellowed sheet of patper, reads as follows:
"This melodeon was bought in New York City the year of 1787 by Hiram Sackett, who, when at a theater, heard an opera singer play on it, singing "Old Dog Tray" to a packed house.
"He was so impressed by it's melodious tone, he negotiated for it's purchase for his daughter, Lucretia Sackett, who married Ebenezer Slocum. At her death, the melodeon was left to her daughter, Sarah Millicent Slocum Borden Zachary, who died in Billings, Montana in 1960.
"The melodeon was inherited by her son, George Ebenezer Borden, and in the summer of 1960, following the death of his mother, Borden placed the melodeon in the home of his daughter, Betty Millicent Borden Eastman.
"..."
According to Borden, the melodeon has been more of a conversation piece since the death of his grandmother, the only person he can remember who played it.
Mrs. Eastman recalls practicing her piano lessons on it during the four summers she spent in Montana with her grandmother.
The rosewood remains in excellent shape and the exterior of the melodeon still is intace with the exception of a few inches of trim. Althourgh the keys are yellowed and worn, the sound still is good." [Supplied by Rachel Stella ]
--------------------------------------------------
NOTE: There is a problem with the date of purchase for the melodeon and who purchased it. Hiram Sackett was born in 1812 and therefore could not have purchased the melodeon in 1787. If the melodeon was purchased in 1787, it would have been purchased by Hiram's father, Joel Sackett-737, or his grandfather Samuel Sackett-280 (1747-1816). - [T. King]

Two paragraphs I omitted from the article above contain some erroneous Sackett information, as follows:
"The family of the original owner, Hiram Sackett, came from Devonshire, England on the Mayflower in 1620 and settled in Plymouth, Mass. They later moved to New York state where Irving now stands, and lived there for 60 years."
"Grandma Sackett was a sister of Harvey Burch, the great American spy of Revolutionary War fame."

First is the matter of the place of origin for the Sacketts of America and the time of migration to New England. For this, check the notes for Simon Sackett-1 and John Sackett-2.

Second is the matter of Hiram and his relationship to "Harvey Burch." According to the following Harvey Birch is a fictional character in a book "The Spy":
Weygant, pages 83-84,
"The following letter discovered not long since in the family of one Captain Van Gasbeck's descendants, living near the City of Kingston, Ulster Co., N. Y. effectually sets at rest the long disputed question as to the identity of Harvey Birch, the hero of Cooper's famous historical novel. "The Spy":

Dear Sir:- I had almost forgotten to give directions to give our friend an opportunity to escape. Upon our plan you will take him prisoner with the parties you are now watching for. His name is Enoch Crosby, alias John Brown. I could wish that he may escape before you bring him two miles on your way to the committee. You will be pleased to advise with Messrs. Cornwall and Captain Clark on the subject and form such plan of conduct as your wisdom may direct, but by no means neglect this friend of ours.

I am your humble servant,
Nathaniel Sackett.

Fishkill, January 7, 1777.
To Capt. Goosbeck. From Nathaniel Sackett, member of committee."

I assume that Weygant is saying that "Harvey Birch" was based on Nathaniel Sackett. According to Weygant, Nathaniel Sackett descended from Simon Sackett-1 through his son, Simon Jr.-3 while Hiram Sackett-1793 descends from John Sackett-2 of New Haven, CT. So it would be difficult for "Grandma Sackett" to be a sister of "Harvey Burch." - [Thurmon King]
