Back in Vermont, we find that in
the decade following the 1800 census nearly all the Sackets left the state
forother parts of the country and the only Sacket listed in the
1810 census for Vermont is Derick Sacket of Tinmouth, Rutland Co., VT.
Most of the Sackets who left VT ended up in western New York. But
due to the fact that there were parts of the country that were not enumerated
in the 1810 census, we are unable to track them accurately by the using the
census. However, most of the Mystery Sackets who are found in the Addison
Co., VT records after 1800 migrated to St. Lawrence Co., NY. One exception
is Chauncey Sackett, son of Joseph Sackett, Sr. Chauncey remained in
Vermont and died there in 1827 at the age of 47. Following his death,
Chauncey's widow migrated to St. Lawrence Co., NY and from there to Michigan.
Another exception is Joseph, Jr. who is not accounted for in any known records
until he appears in the census in Genesee Co., NY in 1820.

Possible Connections for the Mystery Sacketts
Due to the fact that there are several Sacketts in Weygant's book
for whom we have no information beyond a name; and some for whom we have
a wife, but no children listed; it is difficult to determine with any certainty
where our Mystery Sacketts connect. However, there are two families
listed in Weygant's book which give us some interesting possibilities.
The first possible connection comes from among the descendants
of the colonist, John Sackett of New Haven, CT. In the family of
81-Joseph Sackett, b. 1712 we have brothers,
277-Reuben
278-Joseph
280-Samuel, 1747-1816 who m. Thankful Wood.
280-Samuel moved from New Haven, CT to Dutchess Co., NY where he
died in 1816. Nothing is known about 277-Reuben and 278-Joseph
beyond the order in which Weygant placed them. This suggests the
probability that they were older than 280-Samuel.
One of my early suggestions was that the Reuben Sacket and Joseph
Sacket, Sr. found in the Addison Co., VT records from 1775-1800 were the
brothers, 277-Reuben and 278-Joseph Sackett from New Haven, CT, or from
Dutchess Co., NY where their brother lived. However, R. E. Sackett
in his THE SACKETTS OF WISCONSIN. A BRIEF GENERAL HISTORY OF THE
ANCESTORS AND DESCENDENTS OF HARVEY CHAFY SACKETT; 1930; expresses the belief
that Joseph Sackett, Jr., the father of Harvey Chafy Sackett, was a son
of 278-Joseph Sackett. If R. E. Sackett is correct, then the Joseph
Sacket, Sr. of Panton, Addison Co., VT could not be the same as 278-Joseph
Sackett. In my discussion of the ancestry of Joseph Sackett, Jr., the father
of Harvey Chafy Sackett I have presented census information which seems to
indicate that R. E. Sackett was in error and that the father of Joseph Sackett,
Jr. was the son of 634-Joseph Sackett, son of 198-Erastus Sacket.
But with the information we have at present, we do not have enough to make
a conclusive argument either way.
However, 277-Reuben Sackett is the only Reuben Sackett found in
Weygant's book whose birth would fit into the time frame which is close
to the probable time of birth for Reuben Sacket of Addison, Addison Co.,
VT.
The second possible connection for Joseph Sacket, Sr. of Panton,
Addison Co., VT also includes a possible connection for another Mystery
Sackett, John Sacket of Panton, VT. In the family of 118-Hon. Nathaniel
Sackett, of Greenwich, CT, we have the half-brothers:
343-Joseph, b. c 1741-1746
347-John, b. bef. Jan 22 1758 [the baptism date for him and some
of his siblings], married Mary Bush.
Weygant has no further information for these two individuals.
But they do present an interesting possibility for the identity of the
Joseph Sacket, Sr. and John Sacket of Panton, VT.
At present, all we have are some possibilities for a connection
between the Mystery Sacketts of Vermont and any of the Sacketts in Weygant's
book. And the mystery concerning the parents of Hiram Sackett who was married
in Luzerne Co., PA in 1814 and reported his birth place as Vermont.
