Reuben Sackett (1732-1803)

Compiled and Written by
Thurmon King

Reuben Sackett was born 17 Jun 1732, Hebron, Tolland Co. (East Greenwich), CT., the son of Jonathan Sackett and Ann (Filer) Sackett.  Sometime before 1750 Jonathan moved his family to Kent, Litchfield Co., CT. and it was there that Reuben married, 21 Dec 1752, Mercy Finney, daughter of John Finney and Ann Toogood. (For Mercy Finney's line, see Mercy Finney Ancestors)

Weygant, page 109, gives only the bare statistics for Reuben and Mercy Finney.  However, he does give the information that three of Reuben's sons, Dr. Samuel (page 160), Alexander (page 160-61) and Cyrus (page 487) served in the Revolutionary War.  Weygant has no information on the other son, Aaron.

Around 1780 three of Reuben's sons (Dr. Samuel, Aaron, and Cyrus) moved from Connecticut to Pennsylvania.  Cyrus moved on to Bourbon Co., KY. while Dr. Samuel and Aaron remained in Fayette Co., PA.  In 1785 Aaron was married to Dorcas Clark in Fayette Co., PA.

Information contained in several letters written to Dr. Samuel Sackett in Fayette Co., PA. gives a glimpse into part of his life.  One of these letters was one written by Reuben in Warren, CT. to Dr. Samuel in Fayette Co., PA.:

Warren         September 5 ad 1792
Dear and Loving Samuel (three words cannot be read) Love to you and your
(almost a line that cannot be read) goodness having an opertunity
to write to you and let you no of our afares.  I have nothing strange to write to you
I would informe you that I reseved your leter Dated Aug 91 and was glad
to hear of your welfare and you informed me init that that I could have an opor

and the opertunity of sending was over.  I would informe you that L
Licander Curtis is come home and by him I have had the last account
from you and was very glad to hear by him of your welfare.
I would let you no that I reseved a leter from Cyrus dated Augst
the 6th ad 1791 and was very glad to hear from him altho he is gon to
the  End of the path and my hopes is small of ever seeing of aney of you
aney more in the land of the living But if we might be
so hapy as to meat in the first Resurrection what befals us in
this woild is no grate mater. I would let you no that your
sister violity was maried Last November to John Bates

We get an idea of the length of time it took letters to reach their destination at that time from the statement by Reuben:
"I would informe you that I reseved your leter Dated Aug 91 and was glad
to hear of your welfare and you informed me init that that I could have an opor
tunity to write to you by Mr adkins but I did not reseve it till December
and the opertunity of sending was over. . ."
Four months to travel a distance of a little less than 500 miles.

From this letter we learn that Aaron and Dr. Samuel were both located in Fayette Co., PA. and that Cyrus was at a different location.  From other sources we know that at that time Cyrus was in Bourbon Co., KY.  In the letter he mentions that he had received a letter from Cyrus "dated Augst the 6th ad 1791".  This letter would have been written just before General St Clair set out on his ill-fated expedition in the Northwest Territory against the Indian Chief, Little Turtle on 17 Sep 1791.  Cyrus was a part of this expedition, and one of the few who were not massacared in the defeat of Gen. St Clair on 4 Nov 1791.  One can only wonder if Reuben knew of Cyrus' involvement in this expediton.  And if he possibly knew it from the letter he received from Cyrus dated 6 Aug 1791.

In Reuben's letter we get the strong feeling of sadness of Reuben as he faced the probability that in this life, he would never again see his three sons who went west:
" . . . I reseved a leter from Cyrus dated Augst
the 6th ad 1791 and was very glad to hear from him altho he is gon to
the  End of the path and my hopes is small of ever seeing of aney of you
aney more in the land of the living but if we might be
so hapy as to meat in the first Resurrection what befals us in
this woild is no grate mater. . ."
And he closes the letter with:
". . . there was a frost the last nite in August
that Did some Damage altho the wether is very Dry the nites
are very cold as the nuse all comes from your part of the world.
I Shall not attempt to write aney but subscribe my self your
Loving parent til Death   -  Reuben Sackett"

The other direct information we have for him is found in the wills of Reuben (dated 19 March 1800) and Mercy (dated 16 Oct 1804):

Rueben Sackett

Lavina Curtiss
Geo. W. Curtiss

The will was probated in  WARREN AUGUST 10 1803

It is interesting to note the proportions given to the four sons in his estate and the provision that their share would be held for 10 years.  One can only wonder why the larger portion was alloted to Cyrus.  However, there is no indication that either of the three brothers in the west ever came back to claim their share.  Indeed, from the will of their mother which was written four years after the will of Reuben, and a little over a year after his will was probated, she gives the three brothers a time limit of 5 years to come and claim their share of her estate.
