In 1879 he became assistant engineer and supervisor on New York Division of Pennsylvania Railroad, which position he filled until 1888, when he became a division engineer of Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. In 1889 he was tendered and accepted the position of General Roadmaster of Long Island Railroad, of which in the following year he became General Superintendent of Roadway, and in 1891 Chief Engineer.
