Phebe married 2 (1) Christopher Mosteller 1 before 20 Dec 1805 in Butler Co., OH.. Christopher was born in Buncombe Co., NC.. He died in 1844 in Sangamon Co., IL.

Christopher was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina. But when the Lanes, Thompsons, McCords and others came through there coming west he and some more of his relatives joined up and moved west with them. They came as far as Monroe County, Kentucky when some of them headed north to Ohio where Christopher ended up first in Butler County, near Oxford. He moved from there to Union County, Indiana, then to Franklin County, IN. Later he moved back to Butler County and then, in the year 1830, he moved from Butler County, OH. to Sangamon Co., IL. In Sangamon Co. he bought 80 acres of land and later, 70 acres more. The site of the village of Salisbury, IL. came out of the land owned by Christopher. Salisbury was originally called Sacket; named for the Sacket family. Several of the family are buried in the Sacket Cemetery which is about one mile south of Salisbury, a little over a 1/4 mile north east in a pasture. [by Dean Whitehead, in 1990]

Phebe married (2) Rev. John Antle after 1844 in Sangamon Co., IL.. John was born in 1789. He died in 1866.
An article about my Great Great grandfather, Rev. John Antle, (1789-1866), 2nd husband of
Phebe Sackett Mosteller Anfle. I located this article at the Illinois State Historical Library -
History of the Separate Baptist Association in Illinois Printed in Petersburg, IL, 1879

Elder John Antle emigrated to the State of Illinois in the year 1829, and setied in Sangamon county, and in the same year he organized the Bethel Baptist Church near Springfield. In the next year, 1830, he organized the Union Baptist Church in Morgan County. In the year 1833 he organized another church at Salisbury, in Sangamon~County
We wo~d make special mention of Elder John Antle. He was the first minister of the Separate Baptist Church that emigrated to this part of the state. Possessed of good native talent, a common education, but thoroughly versed in the scriptures. sound in doctrine, a man of true piety, higWy esteemed and loved by all, gified in exhortation, powerful in prayer, and especially adapted to the work of an evangelist; he had great faith in the promise of God, and experienced some remarkable answers to prayer. We give one instance, in which contrary to every prospect, his prayer was answered, and in which he seems to have received an assurance entirely satisfactory to himself; that it would be answered, and made the same known to others before the answer was received. A young man, a minister of fair promise of useflilness, in whom the Elder felt an especial interest, was taken violently ill, became unconcious; and grew worse from day to day, until both friends and physicians gave him up to die, and in fact, death was hourly expected. At this time Elder Antle called to see the yourig man, and after looking on the scene for a while in profound silence, he remarked to a friend, "That from every human appearance death was inevitable," but said "he will not die, his Master has a work yet for him to do." That minister still lives to preach the gospel. A short sketch of Elder Antle's life is given in the "Biography of the Old Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois." It is there said of Elder Antle "That the only reward he ever received or expected in this life, was a hope of a reward in Heaven." He has passed away, and although no stately monument marks his final resting place to perpetuate his memory, yet he still lives in the niemory of those who knew him. "Though dead, he still lives in the memory of those who knew him. Though dead, he still speaketh." His influence is still felt among us. As to this world he was poor, sometimes walking a distance of twenty-five or thiry miles to fill an appointment. How applicable the words of Paul to the Corinthians: "As sorrowful., yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing all things."

1422. Thomas Sackett (Aaron Sackett , Reuben Sackett , Jonathan Sacket , William Sacket , John , Simon , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on 30 Apr 1787 in Uniontown, Fayette Co., PA.. He died on 15 Sep 1871 in Macon Co., MO.. [Headstone]
According to his headstone in Ten Mile Cemetery, Macon Co., MO.; Thomas Sackett was born 30 Apr 1787 and died 15 Sep 1871. His father was Aaron Sackett (1760-1827) and his mother was Dorcas Clark (1770-1857) Thomas was born in Fayette Co., PA., probably in Uniontown where his father had bought a lot in 1784.

It appears that in the year 1796 Thomas moved with his parents and siblings from Fayette Co., PA. to what is now Butler Co., OH. It was here that Thomas first married on 23 Nov. 1808.

There are some questions concerning the marriages of Thomas Sackett. Evidence points to him having married four wives while records can be found for only three marriages.

The first marriage, for Thomas, was to Catherine Chambers in Butler Co., OH on 23 Nov 1808. A marriage record from Warren Co., OH. shows that he married Elizabeth (Boyer) Dickerson there on 1 Apr 1832. A headstone in the Old Sackett Cemetery, near Salisbury, IL. shows that Elizabeth Sackett died 21 Sep 1846, age 58y 7m 2d. Then on 15 Apr 1847 he married Mrs. Mary Mckee in Sangamon Co., IL.

There seems to be evidence that Thomas had another wife between his marriage to Catherine Chambers in 1808 and his marriage to Elizabeth (Boyer) Dickerson in 1832. First there are two deeds by which Dorcas Sackett, mother of Thomas, sold the 80 acres of land which were left to her in the will of her husband Aaron Sackett who died in 1827.

In the first deed, dated 6 Oct 1827, Dorcas Sackett, widow of Aaron Sackett, sold the 80 acres in Butler Co., OH. Signing the deed with her were all of her children and their spouses. The wife of Thomas signed as Margaret. In the second deed signed 9 Mar 1830, which involved the same 80 acres in Butler Co., OH., Dorcas Sackett signed for herself and had a power of attorney for her children and spouses; with the exception of Christopher and Phoebe Mosteller and Thomas Sackett. There is no mention of Margaret, the wife of Thomas who signed the deed in 1827.

It appears that following the sale of the land in Ohio, Dorcas and most of her family moved to Sangamon Co., IL. "The 1835 Taxlist of Sangamon Co., Illinois" by Thomas and Temple, shows that Thomas Sackett purchased land in what is now Gardiner Township in 1828 and 1829 and paid taxes on the land in 1835. Thomas Sackett is also listed on the 1830 Census for Sangamon Co., IL.:

Now, in a biographical sketch for L. Marion Wells we read:
"In 1852 he [James H. Wells] wedded Margaret Jane Sacket, a native of Salisbury township, Sangamon county, and a daughter of Thomas Sacket, who was born and reared in Ohio. He was also married there but lost his first wife in this county and subsequently wedded Elizabeth Boyer, who became the mother of Mrs. Wells. For some years after his marriage Mr. Sacket carried on farming in Sangamon county, but later removed to Missouri, spending his last years with his sons in Macon county, that state." [Copied from the Past and Present of Sangamon County; pages 1121 and 1122. by Alyce Beggs 8/28/2000]. Note that it says that Thomas was married in Ohio and lost his first wife in Sangamon County.

In the book by J. C. Power; "Old Settlers of Sangamon County", page 633: "Thomas Sackett was brought up near Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio, and was there married to Peggy Martin. They had six children in Ohio, and moved to Sangamon County, near Sangamon, previous to 1830. . ."

These two sources indicate that Thomas moved to Sangamon Co., IL. with his "first" wife and that her name was Peggy Martin. That Peggy died and then Thomas married Elizabeth Boyer.

However, we have Thomas' biography as told in the Henry Co., Iowa Biographical Sketches from around 1900:
Thomas Sackett was a native of Pennsylvania, born in 1789. Thomas & Catherine Chambers had these children: Dorcas (m. Levi Batterton, Menard Co., IL); John (m. Rhoda Hart of Green Co., KY); Samuel, a farmer of Macon Co., MO; Phoebe, (m. Milas Goodwin, farmer of Coos Co., OR); Mary, (m. Rev. AC Gaines, Douglas Co., NE); Harriet (m. Thompson Crider).

Mr. & Mrs. Sackett removed to Butler Co. in a very early day, & at that place their three eldest children were born, there they improved a beautiful farm on which they resided until 1816. They then removed to Brookville, Franklin Co, IN, where their three youngest children came to make the household. Here as in Ohio, they cultivated a beautiful farm of 160 acres, but in 1826 he moved back to the old home in Ohio. In 1828 he removed to Sangamon Co., IL, and again obtained school land & made a farm of 140 acres. Thomas Sackett was a man always in advance of civilization. While in Sangamon Co., his life companion was called to rest. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church & taught her children that in the teachings of the Bible all were made better to live & better to die.

About 4 years after the death of his first wife, Mr. Sackett married Elizabeth Dickerson & by this union 1 child was born, Margaret (m. Harvey Wells, Sangamon Co., IL); After the death of his second wife in 1847, Mr Sackett married May McKee, who died in 1857 after which time he made his home with his children. He died at the home of his son Samuel, Macon Co., Mo. 1872.

In this account the "first" wife of Thomas is given as Catherine Chambers and indicates that in Sangamon Co., IL. the "life companion" of Thomas died.

The problem surrounding the marriages of Thomas Sackett is compounded by the fact that, to date, researchers have been unable to find a marriage record for Thomas Sackett and Margaret "Peggy" Martin in the state of Ohio, or any of the surrounding states. It has been speculated that Catherine Chambers might have been the married name of a Catherine Margaret or Margaret Catherine Martin and that her marriage to Thomas Sackett was her second marriage.

Thomas married 1 (1) Catherine Chambers on 23 Nov 1808 in Butler Co., OH. Catherine died before 1827.

They had the following children:

+ 2831 F i Dorcas D. Sackett

Harriet married Elijah Thompson Crider on 7 Apr 1845 in Sangamon Co., IL..
+ 2835 F v Mary Sackett
+ 2836 M vi Samuel Sackett
Thomas married (2) Margaret Martin after 1820 in Hamilton, Butler Co., OH.. Margaret died before 10 Mar 1830 in Butler Co., OH..
The death date of Margaret is placed as being between a deed recorded in Butler Co., OH. in which she is listed as the wife of Thomas Sackett and another deed recorded in Butler Co., OH. on 10 Mar 1830.

In the 1830 Census for Sangamon Co., IL. Thomas Sackett is listed as head of household with no wife.

Thomas married (3) Elizabeth Dickerson on 1 Apr 1832 in Warren Co., OH.. Elizabeth was born on 19 Feb 1788. She died on 21 Sep 1846 in Sangamon Co., IL.. She was buried in Sackett Cemetery, Sangamon County, IL..
Elizabeth Bowyer and Caleb Dickerson married in Warren County, OH 3/26/1807. That would fit in the time frame of the Samuel Dickerson who is buried in the Sackett Cemetery who died in 1851 and was 40. That would make him born 1811. - [Alyce Beggs GBeggs9111@aol.com]

[1858 deed from Samuel and wife Sarah to Thomas Sackett]

"SACKETT: Samuel Sackett was born September 1, 1797, in Butler County, Ohio. He was married to Miss Sarah Wickard, in 1820. Moved to Sangamon Co., IL. in 1829. Was converted in 1831 and united with the M. E. Church. He lived in Clinten, DeWitt Co., IL. for a number of years. Five years ago Father and Mother Sackett came to Twin Springs, Linn Co., Kansas, to spend their last days with their only daughter, wife of Hen. B. Campbell. The were surrounded with the comforts of life, and with kind hands to minister to their wants. Three years ago Mother Sackett was called away. Father Sackett was left until Feb. 9, 1880. He filled the offices of trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, class leader and steward, and had been a subscriber for the Central Christian Advocate ever since it had been a paper. He was a good man, spurning all comformity to the world, and seeking through earnest prayer and diligent study of God's Word, to become an Israelite indeed, and his efforts were rewarded with a rich and happy experience. His last words were; "Christ is all my hope." A large concourse of friends and relatives followed him to his last resting place. The funeral sermon was preached by the writer, from Matt. 25:21. - James M. Payne"
