RICHARD R. WELLS. - Industry, perseverance, intelligence and good judgment are the price or success in agricultural work in these modern days of farming, when the hard, unremitting toil of former years has given way to the scientific use of modern machinery and a knowledge of the proper treatment of the sale. Sangamon County has many skilled farmers, who treat their vocation more as a profession than a mere occupation, and take justifiable pride in their accomplishments. Among them may be mentioned Richard R. Wells, of Salisbury Township. Mr. Wells was born on Section 34, Salisbury Township, December 12 1871, a son of James H and Margaret (Sackett) Wells.
Richard R. Wells received a district school education and was reared to the life of a farmer, remaining at home until his marriage, March 10, 1892 by Rev. Goff, to Miss Cora V. Campbell, who was born in Cartwright Township, June 4, 1873, daughter of William V. and Mary E. (Valentine) Campbell. After their marriage Mr. And Mrs. Wells remained on the Wells homestead for one year, but in the spring of 1893 they removed to another farm belonging to Mr. Wells father, and in 1895 again moved, locating on their present place on Section 34, Salisbury Township, which is now one of Sangamon County's best farms. Mr. Wells has 252 acres of land in one body in a high state of cultivation where he raises large crops and breeds of excellent grade of livestock. They have a beautiful home, furnished with all the modern improvements, including heat, water and light, and it is ably presided over by Mrs. Wells. Mr. Wells is affiliated with the Modern Woodmen of America.
Mr. And Mrs. Wells have been the parents of three children, one of whom died in infancy. The others are: Earl E., born November 20, 1892, died April 10, 1911 buried in the family lot, in Richland Cemetery; and Beulah Belle, born October 25, 1896, who lives at home. 2838. Jonathan Limpus (Sarah Sackett , Aaron Sackett , Reuben Sackett , Jonathan Sacket , William Sacket , John , Simon , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on 8 Feb 1817 in Columbus Twp, Fayette Co., IN.. He died on 21 Feb 1856.
Jonathan Limpus was born on February 8, 1817 in Indiana. He was the son of Enoch Aaron Limpus and Sarah Sackett. He was probably named after his uncle, Honathan Limmpus. Honathan was about fourteen when his father died. His mother married a Mr Watts and left for Sangamon County, Illinois. It is not for sure when they moved.
In 1837 Jonathan married Elizabeth Foxwell, the daughter of Lemuel Foxwell and Margaret Caffey. The Foxwells were living in Fayete County, Indiana according to the 1840 census. Jonathan probably met Elizabeth whild visiting his Limpus relatives in Fayette County. The 1840 census shows Jonathan living in Bartholemew County, Indiana, which is just south of Johnson County, Indiana.
Between the birth of John Manford Limpus in 1846 (3/31/46) and the birth of Henry Clay Limpus in 1848, they moved to Illinois. They ended up in Adams County. Jonathans's mother and sister lived in Sangamon County. Some of the Foxwells were in Adams County in 1850 but if they followed Jonathan or he followed them is not known. They probably lived in the north part of the county. Edwin'smilitary papers how that he lived near woodville after the Civil War. It is assumed that this would be near the location of the rest of the family. Woodville is on the northern edge of Adams County, about half way between the Mississippi River and the eastern county line.
Jonathan died on February 21, 1856. There is a family tradition that he was killed when a tree fell on him when he was clearing land. - [Daryl Limpus; 1983]
Jonathan married Elizabeth Foxwell daughter of Lemuel Foxwell and Margaret Caffey on 13 Feb 1837. Elizabeth was born on 16 Nov 1815 in Glouchester Co., VA.. She died on 13 Dec 1899 in Archie, Bates Co., MO..
Elizabeth came to Indiana with her mother and family in 1835. She married Jonathan Limmpus in 1837. In 1868 Elizabeth and three sons, Henry, George, and Frank came to Missouri. In January of 1869 she purchased the west half of Section 2 in East Boone Township in Bates County, Missouri. They were two miles south of the town of Everett, which was founded in 1867.
The 1870 census shows Elizabeth, her three sons, and her mmother, Margaret Foxwell. The 1880 census shows Elizabeth, her son George and George's young bride, Nancy (Nannie). On December 13, 1899 Elizabeth died. She is buried in Everett Cemetery, Everett, Bates Co., MO. - [Daryl Limpus; 1983]
Jonathan and Elizabeth had the following children:
