Reuben Sackett was born in Butler County, Ohio, November 29, 1825. His parents were Samuel Sackett and Sarah Wickard. He moved with his parents to Illinois in 1828 and settled near Springfield Sangamon Co. where they lived for five years. In the spring of 1833, following the Blackhawk war, he moved with his parents to Dixon Ferry on Rock River, Lee County, Illinois presently In 1831 Lee Co. was in Jo Daviess Co. In 1836 that part of Lee Co. was in Ogle Co.Reuben R. Sackett had a brother named Alfred M. Sackett. The obituary of Alfred states that he was born April 17th, 1822 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Alfred accompanied his family on their moves and to Dixon where he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in 1835 age 13. In 1842 Alfred moved to Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. On September 23, 1847 he was married to Louisa Leet assumably in Galena.
Apparently Samuel and Sarah lived in Dixon until 1847 then he and his wife appear on the 1850 census of Sangamon Co. Illinois with the family of Bazilla and Rosana Campbell.
In 1849 Reuben Sackett then 24 years old, went after gold in California. The story goes that he was up in the Feather River area In 1853 he returned to Illinois and lived in Galena a few years. While there he was married to Miss Elizabeth Rennick daughter of Francis and Margaret Rennick. Reuben and Eliza were married in the home of Alfred M. Sackett in Galena.
In 1855 Reuben is listed on the state census of Jo Daviess page 14 Line 22:
1 male between 20 and 30 [b. 1825-1835]
1 male between 30 and 40 [b. 1815-1825]Reuben was 30 in 1855.
The Galena Gazette and Advertizer listed the following marriage:- November 20 1857 - Reuben Sackett of Freeport and Miss Elizabeth Rennick of this city.
Reuben and Eliza had nine children: Mame, Sarah Jane (Sadie), Rosella N. (Rose or Odie), Nettie L., Hattie E., Anna, Ida, Flora, Francis Reuben, William H. [There are 10 names listed here; Anna, Ida, or Flora one, must be the same person as Hattie E. Nettie L. was born August 9, 1858 at Freeport Stephenson Co. Illinois. - Laurie Young]
The 1860 census of Stephenson Co. town of Silver Creek, June 22 1860 page 68 household 501/469 lists the following:
Reuben Sackett M 31 Farmer Ohio Tenant/600
Eliza Sackett F 24 Ireland
Netta F 2 Illinois
Mary A. Ranney F 35 Widow Ireland
Robert Ranney M 8 Illinois
Homer Brown M 17 Laborer Penn.( I have a suspicion that Mary A. Ranney listed here, is really Mary A. Rennick the sister of Eliza. Mary A. would have been 35 in 1860. - Laurie Young)
In the obituary of Reuben Sackett it States that they lived on a farm near Galena about three years before moving to Clinton. If this is the farm it is about 30 miles E away from Galena in another county. Silver Creek was about ___ miles away from Freeport. His daughter Sarah Jane (Sadie) was born in Freeport October 27, 1860. The family moved to Clinton in a covered wagon in 1861, the first year of the civil war His first enterprise in Clinton was a blacksmith business which he sold to George Aughinbaugh. Reuben's seven other children were all probably born in Clinton, Clintonia township, DeWitt County.

Gone to his RewardAnother of Clinton's Oldest Citizens is at Rest on the Other Shore - Sick Several Weeks.
Another of the aged pilgrims on the highway that leads from life to death has fallen by the wayside. After a journey of nearly four score years Reuben Sackett heard the silent voice and his soul was at rest. He was sick last fall and had been confined to his home most of the time since, and for some time it was realized there was little hope for his recovery. The end came about 10 o'clock Saturday, his family being at his bedside.
Reuben Sackett was born in Butler county, Ohio Nov. 29, 1825. In 1828 his parents came to Illinois and lived near Springfield for five years when they moved to Dixon where they lived until 18~7. In 1849 Mr. Sackett then 24 years old, went to California to hunt gold. In 1853 he returned to Illinois and lived at Galena a few years. While there he was married to Miss Elizabeth Rennick Nov. 19, 1857, who survives him. They lived on a farm near Galena about three years before coming to Clinton in 1861, which has since been their home. Of the nine children born to them three are living. They are Mrs, Frederickson, of Champaign; Mrs. E. I. Day, and Mrs W. A. Golze, of Clinton.
His life in Clinton until a few years ago, when he sold his interest in the furniture business, was one of activity First in the blacksmith business which he sold to George Aughinbaugh, then a partner with Henry Rennick in a grocery. He next engaged in the furniture business with F. H. Bogar. John Carroll succeeded Mr. Bogar and A. L. Lemen succeeded Mr. Carroll, who died a few years ago.Funeral services were held at the M. (Quincy is due west of Clinton but clear across the state on the Iowa / Illinois border.Reuben Sackett and Eliza for years lived at 212 East Washington Street in Clinton. When their youngest daughter Mame married Will Golze, the Golzes lived with Reuben and Eliza. Mame inherited this house which she kept until her death and willed to her niece Ruby Foard Reuben and Eliza as wedding presents built Sadie a house next door on Madison Street, the Sackett house being the largest house and located on a corner. Down the street on Madison and next door to Sadie was a house they had built for their other daughter Rose. Roses house was the smallest. In her later life she vacated this house to move in with Sadie, and Roy H. Foard used this building as his business office when he was selling coal. For years then the three Sackett sisters lived widowed on this corner. The houses were leveled in the early 50's and a parking lot put in.
Reuben R. Sackett died February 12, 1904 aged 75 years. Eliza Sackett died September 16, 1918 aged 83 years, 5 months, 9 days.
Reuben Sackett was engaged in several business enter-prizes while living in Clinton. He was partners with Henry Rennick in the grocery business. Henry Rennick arrived in Clinton in 1865 after service in the Civil War. He was a brother of Eliza Sackett. Reuben was also at one time partners with his brother Alfred Sackett in the grocery business. On the 1870 census Henry, Alfred and Reuben are all listed as Grocers The Sackett & Rennick partnership was dissolved in 1877, Reuben was later a partner of John F. Hainmond in the Grocery business. John F. Hammond married Clara Sackett a daughter of Alfred M. Sackett. John was a clerk in the store possibly until it was sold, John's brother Charles N. Hammond started in the Sackett store as a delivery boy. The following advertisement was in the Clinton Register, Friday, April 8, 1881:

Mrs. Eliza Sackett is Called to Rest
Prominent Pioneer and One of Community's Most Respected Citizens Dies at 9:30 Last NightThe Old Grim Reaper laid its hand upon the brow of one of Clinton's best known and most respected citizens, Mrs. Eliza Sackett, who was called to her reward last night at 9:40 o'clock. A short but fatal attack of bronchial Pneumonia preceded her demise. She was 83 years old at the time of her death. Mrs. Sackett was a pioneer resident of this community and had a host of friends who sincerely mourn her loss.
Mrs Eliza Sackett, nee Rennick, was born April 7, 1835, in county Fermanaugh in Ireland and came to America on a sailboat when she was only six years old. The trip across the waters consumed about six months, for in those days water transportation was extremely slow. Mrs. Sackett was one of a family of thirteen children.
On Nov. 19, 1857, the then Miss Rennick was united in marriage to Reuben Sackett at Galena, Illinois, and with her husband in the year 1862 moved to Clinton to make this town their home. For the following fifty six years Mrs. Sackett had made the family residence at 212 East Washington Street her only home.Mrs. Sackett was the mother of nine children, all of whom, with the exception of Mayme, Sadie, and Rosie are deceased. These have married and Mayme is the wife of W. A. Golze, Rosie is the wife of Ellis Day, and Sadie is the widow of the late E. A. Frederickson. For many years Mrs. Sackett made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Golze. The children who have died were Nettie, Anna, Ida, Flora, Francis R. and William He Mrs. Jennie Taylor, 1004 East Main Street, a sister, is the only surviving member of Mrs. Sacketts family.
During her entire lifetime Mrs. Sackett had been a staunch supporter of the Methodist Episcopal church and was exceedingly active in the church circles. Both she and her late husband were active in the building of the present structure. Several days previous to her illness she was hostess to the Woman's Home Missionary society, of which she was a member. She was always considerate of other persons' feelings and was unusually kind and of a consoling disposition, She had acquired a host of friends in this community who will keenly feel her 1055. By deed and action she was a friend of all and it was her pleasure to speak naught but good of all.The funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning from the Methodist church with the pastor Rev. A.M. Wells, officiating. Burial will be made in Woodlawn cemetery. Two grandchildren, Miss Marie Golze and Mrs R. H. Foard also survive.

Less than three years ago Mr. Ellis I. Day and Miss Hattie Sackett were united in marriage. Today the young bride lies cold in death and by her side the babe for which she died. Hardly have the pleasant notes of the wedding march died away on the ear than they are followed by the solemn requiem of the funeral dirge.
Life is one sad funeral procession from the cradle to the tomb. Mr. Day and his young wife looked forward to long life and with happiness at the thought that soon a young life was to become part of their home circle and unite their hearts even closer together. It was not to be... the death angel entered the home and has taken the young mother and her babe and the husband and father is left to mourn for his loved ones who have passed from earth to the world beyonde
Mrs Ellis I. Day died at her home on last evening. Her sickness was brief only two or three days. The babe for whom she gave her life also lies beside her in death. She was born in Clinton and was in her twenty ninth year. Less than three years ago she became a happy wife. Tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock her relatives will be followed to Woodlawn cemetery by many sorrowing friends.
The ladies of the Eastern Star are requested to be at the house at 2 o'clock to attend the funeral.

Mrs. Nettie Day
After only a brief illness of two weeks Mrs. Nettie L. Day, wife of Ellis I. Day, died on last Saturday afternoon. It was a terrible stroke on her family for not one of them dreamed that death was so near. Only twenty two months ago she was united in marriage to Mr. Ellis I. Day, their marriage occurring the 19th of November 1885. They were building a handsome cottage on West Washington Street, and Mr. Day and his wife were looking forward to the time in the near future when their home would be ready for themselves and the entertainment of their friends. Man proposes: God disposes. The uncertainty of life makes calculations in vain. Mrs. Day was the daughter of Mr. Reuben Sackett. She was born in Freeport Illinois August 9 1858. Her father came to Clinton in the year 1862. For many years and till her marriage, Mrs. Day was the leading soprano singer in the Methodist Church. Life was pleasant to her for she was surrounded by everything that was worth living for. Her sudden death has brought asadness to many hearts even outside of her family connection. The funeral services will be in the Methodist Church this afternoon at two o'clock.

Dearest faterm thou hast left us,
A voice we loved is still;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God, in His mercy, has recalled
The one his love had given,
And though the body molders here
His soul is safe in heaven
One by earth;s ties are broken.
Though they lay so near our hearts;
We hope again to meet with father,
Where we do not have to part.
