born in Litchfield, Connecticut, October 14, 1814, and was taken
to Paris, Oneida County, New York, the following year, where
he lived until 1843, during which time he graduated at Hamilton
Academy. Mr. Carter emigrated with his family to Rock County,
Wisconsin, where he located one hundred and sixty acres of government
land, and has added to his purchase until now he has a prairie
farm of two hundred and forty-four acres, with good house,
barn, granaries, and other outbuildings, and forty acres of good
timber. He was married to Miss Dollie Wadham, of Litchfield,
Connecticut, and afterwards to Miss Sarah Wedg. The fruits of
his first marriage were three children, of who two are still
living, - Charles and Ellen. He also has one child by his second
wife, - Miss Frankie. Mr. C. was a member of the convention at
Madison which framed the Constitution of Wisconsin; a member
