Elisha NEWHALL - The subject of this sketch was born of
English parents, in August, 1783, at Marblehead, Massachusetts.
After receiving a common school education he chose the vocation
of a farmer; removing from his native State with his father to
Bradford, Vermont, where he resided many years, and was married
to Miss Rebecca Garey at the age of twenty-three, by whom two
children were given him, - Mary Ann and Rebecca, - who are both
living. He afterwards moved to Erie County, New York, where he
married Miss Esther Richardson, the fruits of which union were
four children, - Wright, Elbridge, Sallie A., and Angelette,
- all of whom are still living. From New York Mr. Newhall emigrated
to Ohio, thence to Michigan, thence to Indiana, and finally to
Rock County, Wisconsin, where he arrived in 1836, and located
two hundred and eighty acres of government land, a part of which
is still retained as the old homestead and owned by Mr. E. G.
Newhall, his son. It contains three fine houses and other buildings,
and is under a high state of cultivation. Here Elisha Newhall
removed with his family in 1837, and resided until his death.
He participated in the meeting for the organization of the township
of Johnstown, and always exercised unbounded interest in its
advancement. He was chosen by the citizens of the township to
represent their interests at the time of the government land
sales at Milwaukee. Politcally he was always a staunch supporter
of Democratic principles. Mr. N. began life poor, but in the
acquisition of property was reasonably successful; the secret
of which was a close application to business and a rigid course
of honest and fair dealing with all. He was always among the
most prominent gentlemen of the township in which he lived, and
was a highly respected citizen and much beloved by all. |
