APRIL 16, 1900. - Regular Meeting

Council Chambers.

Beloit, Wis., April 16th, 1900.

 
Regular meeting.
Mayor SMITH presiding.
Present - Ald. BUCKERIDGE, CLARKE, CUNNINGHAM, DAY, GARDNER, GESLEY, HANSEN,
HEWITT, LEDELL, MERRILL, MUELLER, NEEDHAM, SHARP - 13.
Absent - Ald. HELM, POLLOCK - 2.
The minutes of the meeting of April 10th were read and approved.
Ald. CUNNINGHAM presented the following petition.
 
To the Honorable Mayor and Common Council of the city of Beloit:
Gentlemen: - We the undersigned tax-payers of the Third ward of the city of Beloit would respectfully ask your
honorable body to make some arrangements to take away the water from the corner of Hackett and E streets which has no outlet and causes the water to flood over and cause great damage to our property and health.
        C. S. MARSH, T. GESLEY, H. EVERSON, Fred MITCHELL, and 31 others.

 

On the motion of Ald. CUNNINGHAM the petition was referred to the Aldermen of the Third and Fourth wards
with power to have the City Engineer make a survey to see if the water can be carried off said streets.
Ald. DAY, for the Aldermen of the Third ward, reported on the petition for grade on Eighth street between E and D
streets as follows:
 
Your Third ward Aldermen to whom the within petition was referred respectfully recommend that it be granted
and that grade stakes be set and grade established.

Ald. HANSEN moved, as an amendment, that the City Engineer be directed to fix a grade and report same to
Council at the next regular meeting.
The amendment was adopted and then the report as amended was adopted.
Ald. HANSEN presented the following resolution which was adopted by the unanimous vote of the Council, the ayes
and noes being called:
Resolved, That the sum of $3125.00 be and the same is hereby appropriated to pay for services of inspectors,
clerks, ballot clerks and special police of election held Tuesday, April 3rd, 1900, and for the registration prior thereto, as per list hereto attached, and the City Clerk is hereby directed to issue orders on the City Treasurer for same.
Ald. CLARKE presented the following resolution which was adopted:
Resolved, That the City Engineer be instructed to give sidewalk grade and terrace line on east side of Prairie avenue
between Bushnell and Chapin streets, block 9.
Ald. BUCKERIDGE presented the following resolution which was laid over until the next regular meeting:
Resolved, That an order for $360.44 be drawn on the Treasurer payable to HARDING & NELSON, in full
payment of the abutting property sewer taxes assessed against city properties as follows:
Ctf. No. 230, City Park, School street and Park avenue $279.75
Ctf. No. 266, Mechanics Green, Harrison avenue 69.44
Ctf. No. 237, Central Fire Station, Fourth street 11.25
$360.44
Ald. HEWITT presented the following resolution which was adopted:
Resolved, That the Mayor and City Attorney are authorized to incur any expense that may be necessary in defending
the case of Maud CARPENTER vs. the City of Beloit.
Ald. HEWITT presented the following resolution which was adopted by the unanimous vote of the Council, the ayes
and noes being called:
Resolved, That $200 be appropriated to defend the case of Maud CARPENTER against the City now pending in
Circuit Court, the same to be disbursed by the Clerk under direction of the Mayor and City Attorney as may be necessary.
Ald. NEEDHAM presented the following resolution which was adopted:
Resolved, That the Board of Public Works be instructed to cause a sidewalk grade to be established on the south
side of Park Place, between Eclipse avenue and Church street. Also on the west side of North College street, between Park Place and Lawton avenue, and that the City Engineer be ordered to establish the same, subject to the direction of the Council.
