MAY 21. - Regular Meeting

Council Chambers.

Beloit, Wis., May 21, 1900.

Regular meeting.
Mayor SMITH presiding.
Present - Ald. BUCKERIDGE, CLARKE, CUNNINGHAM, DAY, GARDNER, GESLEY, HANSEN,
HELM, HEWITT, LEDELL, MERRILL, MUELLER, NEEDHAM, POLLOCK, SHARP - 15.
The minutes of the meeting of May 7th were read and approved.
Ald. CUNNINGHAM presented the following petition, which was referred to the Judiciary committee to report at
the next regular meeting of the Council:

                            May 14, 1900.
Honorable Mayor and Common Council, City of Beloit: -
The undersigned business firms and property owners of the business district of Beloit respectfully
petition your honorable Council that they cause to be removed from the business streets, within the fire limits, all poses and all wires running in and parallel with the streets. These poles and wires are unsightly and a burden to the property, as well as a menace in case of fire. We are lead to present this petition at this time because of a well founded report that the Bell Company have begun digging new holes on State street, to erect larger poles, to carry more wires, and it is reported their whole system is to be changed over and rebuilt. Therefore we think this is a proper time for the laying of cables underground, or overhead in the alleys, as the local company has done. We ask that immediate action be taken in this matter, or that the Mayor notify the Bell Company not to erect any new poles in the business district pending the consideration of this petition at the next Council meeting.

To the Mayor and the Common Council of the City of Beloit: -
Gentlemen: The undersigned property owners on the east side of Park avenue, between Chapin and
Emerson streets, petition and pray that you cause a new grade to be established on the east side of the Park avenue between said streets for the reason that we consider the present grade too high to conform to the property abutting upon said street.
