Ald. POLLOCK presented the following petition, which was referred to the Fire committee:

To the Honorable Mayor and Common Council of the City o fBeloit:--
Your petitioner, Ingle CARPENTER, formerly of the City of Beloit, State of Wisconsin, now a resident
of the City of New York, State of New York, having acquired by deed from Louisa CARPENTER of the City of Beloit the title to the land beneath the river adjoining the CARPENTER block on Bridge street, fronting on the City Bridge of said street, is desirous of erecting a business block, to be situated thrity-five feet to the west of the said CARPENTER block, said block to be sixty feet in width and ninety feet in depth, and to be used for business purposes, consisting of stores and professional offices.
The plans for this building are in the hands of my contractor, William H. QUINN of the City of Beloit,
and are generally as follows: The building is to be erected upon piles suitably braced and joined and of sufficient strength to support the weight of the building and any conceivable pressure which may come upon or against them. The walls of the building are to be solid wood, six inch walls, the front to be covered with pressed brick against such solid wood, and the two sides and back to be covered with iron, the roof to be a tar and gravel one, and every plan and improvement to be used which may render the building absolutely fire proof.
I petition your honorable body that I may be granted permission to build the block according to the
plans in the hands of said contractor and generally submitted by me in this petition.
Dated, New York City, June 28, 1900.
        Ingle CARPENTER, petitioner.
