- Ald. HANSEN presented the following communication:
|
- Honorable Mayor and Common Council, City
of Beloit:
- Gentlemen: - To keep in pace with other improvements
it is our desire to give Beloit the best and most
- modern system of lighting for her streets.
- With this in view we have recently spent
considerable money and time consulting eminent engineers,
- well qualified in the matter, and our efforts
have resulted in a trial of what is known as enclosed alternating
arcs. The same has been adopted in various cities about the country,
viz: - Boston, Mass., Hamilton, Ont., Minneapolis, Minn., Evanston,
Ill., Racine, Wis., Madison, Wis., and a great number of other
cities. Our experiment has not met with popular approval so far
and our investigations have resulted in a discovery that our
lamps are all hung too high, the maximum amount of light being
had from the new type of lamp when hung about 18 or 20 feet from
the ground instead of 40 to 60 as with the old type now in use.
This effect has been purposely brought about by the inventors
of the system for the purpose of diffusing the light at a great
distance horizontally from the lamp, instead of having all the
light thrown vertically within a short distance from the lamp.
- We wish it understood that we are entirely
disinterested as to the system employed other than as a
- matter of professional pride; we would like
to have the most modern and the best. However, we wish to leave
the matter entirely to the vote of the people, and whatever is
decided by them they shall have. It is suggested by our engineers
that in order to thoroughly investigate the matter before the
decision is made, a test should be arranged to practically demonstrate
the advantages and disadvantages of the two systems. We are willing
to stand the expense, and if it is your pleasure, we will arrange
for a test and invite you all to be present to decide for yourselves.
- Very respectfully,
- BELOIT ELECTRIC CO.,
- Jos. C. MARKLEY, Mgr.

- On motion of Ald. HANSEN the communication was received
and placed on file and the Street Light committee
- authorized to arrange for a test at some future time.
- Ald. BUCKERIDGE appeared and took his seat.
- Ald. HANSEN presented the following petition which
was referred to the Street Lights committee:
|
- Honorable Mayor and Common Council, City
of Beloit, Wis.:
- Gentlemen: - We respectfully petition your
honorable body to allow us the use of the fifty dollars
- which was held out from the amount of our
July bill until investigations could be made regarding a contemplated
new system of street lighting.
- We are doing our best to get you the test
system obtainable and we do not deem it just that we be
- punished for our efforts in this way. The
outages for the month of July averaged less than one lamp for
the entire month, which is considered almost perfect service.
- The withholding of this fifty dollars prevents
us from using any of the amount allowed us, and on
- account of our present increased expenditures
on account of street lighting, we can use [continue to Page
