- The minutes of the meeting of Jan. 7th were read and approved.
- Summons in the action of Nettie GRAVES v. The City
of Beloit having been served on the city the matter was
- referred to the Judiciary committee and City Attorney with
power to defend.
- Ald. BUCKERIDGE and GESLEY appeared and took
their seats.
- A communication for the League of Wisconsin Municipalities
was received and referred to the Finance committee.
- The following communication, with proposed ordinance accompanying,
was presented to the Council:

- Eau Claire, Wis., Jan. 19, 1901.
- To the Honorable, the Mayor and Common Council
of the City of Beloit, Wisconsin:
- Gentlemen: The Rock River Electric Railway
Company hereby respectfully applies to your honorable
- body for a franchise giving it authority
to construct, maintain and operate an electric street railway
upon certain streets, public ways, highways and bridges of the
city of Beloit. Herewith accompanying this application and a
part thereof is a proposed ordinance which contains, in legal
form, a statement and the substance of the rights, authorities
and privileges asked for by said Company.
- It is the intention and purpose of said Company,
in the event that your honorable body grants to it
- this franchise, to commence as soon as practicable,
and to speedily complete a first-class electric street railway
in your city, and thereafter maintain and operate it so as to
afford the highest efficiency of service.
- The stockholders and officers of this Company
have faith in the project and believe that by furnishing
- and maintaining efficient railway service
in your city it will pay.
- This Company has no connection with any other
Company or project, and is not procuring this
- franchise for the use or purpose of any other
person or corporation.

- Ald. HANSEN presented the following resolution which
was adopted:
- Resolved, By the Mayor and Common Council of the city
of Beloit, Wisconsin, that the proposed franchise of the
- Rock River Electric Railway Company, filed with the City
Clerk and presented to this Council, be and the same is hereby
ordered to be printed, at the expense of the applicant, in the
official paper of this city for two weeks, as provided by Section
940 B, of the Wisconsin statutes for the year 1898.
- Ald. BUCKERIDGE presented the following petition which
was referred to the Fire committee:

- To the Honorable Mayor and Common Council
of the city of Beloit:
- The undersigned requests permission to build
an addition in rear of livery stable occupied by C. T.
- SMITH on State
St., to said stable, same to be one and a half stories high and
built in accordance with plan presented with this petition. Said
building to be covered with iron and to have iron roof.

- Mr. F. CLEARY addressed the Council on behalf of H.
H. CLOUGH and others, who desired a franchise for an
- electric railway.
- Ald. HEWITT, for the Fire committee, reported recommending
the petition of R. J. BURDGE. On motion the
- report was adopted and petition granted.
- The following petition was presented and referred to the
Judiciary committee:

of the city of Beloit, Wisconsin:
- Gentlemen: The undersigned hereby petition
the Common Council of the city of Beloit, Wisconsin, to
- vacate and discontinue the alley running
east and west through the center of Block Two (2) of FLUEKIGER's
Second Addition to Beloit, being 16.58 feet in width and extending
from the west line of West street west to the east line of Grand
Avenue and separating lots from 1 to 12 inclusive on the north
