The following communication, with bill for $50.00 attached, was presented and referred to the Street Lights
committee:

Beloit, Wis., Feb. 4, 1901.

Hon. Mayor and Common Council, City of Beloit.
Gentlemen: -
During the first six days of December, the street lighting service was exceedingly poor, due to a mis-
understanding between our company and the concern from whom we purchased the new street lamps.
They sent us two different types of lamps. One style called for glycerine to be used in the dash pot of
the lamp, and the other style was to be operated without glycerine.
Through a misunderstanding, we used glycerine in all of the lamps, and the consequence was that
when the weather grew cold, the lamps did not work properly.
On December 7th, we had an arc lamp expert come from the factory to adjust the lamps, when the
trouble was detected.
From Dec. 1st to Dec. 7th there were forty lamps out one night each, and from the 7th to the 31st,
there were six more, making a total of forty-six lamps that did not make their full run for one night.
The forty-six lamps amount to $9.20, figured $.20 per night for each lamp.
During the month of November when the weather was mild and the lamps were working better, there
were twenty-five lamps out, one night each, as per list enclosed, amounting to just $5.00.
Our bill in November was cut down $10.00 in addition to the $5.00 credited by us on the bill.
When we presented our bill for December, we gave no credit for lamps out, as the $10.00 held out in
November, more then compensated for the $9.20, outages in December.
Our December bill was then cut down $50.00, which we consider is unfair, and we ask that the
December bill be reconsidered and this amount allowed.
Last fall, we installed additional [continue to Page 90]
