Part V. Military Order of
Foreign Wars of United States
[p. 821]
The war with Spain and the later conflicts with the insurgents
of the Philippine Islands and the "Boxers" of the Chinese
Empire, have given rise to a number of military societies
differing but little in their purpose, but sufficiently in their
articles of association to create between them a spirit of rivalry.
Officers of repute and standing have found it difficult to decide
between these several societies and have as yet joined none.
To these especially, and to all officers of honorable record
the Society of Foreign Wars presents unusual attractions. It
has no rival society. Its sons derive their right of membership
from personal service in the War with Mexico or those waged in
later years with Spain, with the Filipinos, with the Chinese
bandits or else by inheritance from ancestors who fought with
England, France or the Algerians in the earlier days of the nation.
The National Society embraces the most historic names of America.
The state societies are rapidly growing and throughout the society
there is harmony of spirit and just pride in the membership.
In the Eastern States no Order is more highly regarded. In the
West it seems as yet, but imperfectly understood.
