In August, 1917, the U.S. Food Administration issued cards
giving suggestions to aid in the conservation of wheat,
meat, fats and sugar, those foods which contained the most
concentrated, nutritive value and required the least shipping
space. In September the food shortage, becoming more apparent,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays were designated as meatless and wheatless
days and sugar limited to two pounds per person each month. Mr.
M. L. Karney was appointed Food Director for Brodhead. Later
Food Pledge Cards were signed and displayed in the windows of
the majority of homes.
