In July, 1917, through the Woman's Committee of the County
Council of Defense, Miss Agnes Boeing of the University
of Wisconsin Extension Division, gave a lecture and practical
exhibition of the canning of fruit and vegetables to the women
of Brodhead, at the High School.
In September, under the auspices of the Civics Club, Miss
Emma Conley of the University gave a talk to the women of
the city, on the use and conservation of foods, telling of
the necessity for restricting the use of wheat, meat and fats.
Under the same auspices, Miss Abby Marlatt, Director of the Home
Economics Department of the University of Wisconsin, and member
of the National Food Administration, delivered a lecture on Woman's
War Work, at the Congregation Church in March, 1918.
In December, 1918, the Civics Club engaged Prof. George Wagner
of the University of Wisconsin, who had so
interested a Brodhead audience before, for a second lecture.
Prof. Wagner spoke at this time on Reconstruction.
Under the direction of the Mothers' Club, Mrs. Edith Hoyt
of the University Extension Department, spoke to an
assemblage of women at the Congregational Church on Mothers
in War Time. This club also took up some of the work of the Child
Welfare Campaign, and superintended the weighing and measuring
of all children in the city, under the age of six years.
