Extracts from Letters of the Boys With the Colors

(Copied from Newspapers)
From Private Leo Halverson (pp. 105-106)

May 12, 1918, France.

"As today is Mother's Day, I will write one to you. Hope that your chickens are doing nicely and the garden you were
speaking about. Do not worry about me for I am having the best of times and feel sure that we will all come back soon. The Germans surely must give up some time. This country is certainly pretty now, everything blossoming and green. But at that it never will look as good as Wisconsin to me.
"You don't know how well I like to get your letters with those paper clippings in."

May 15, 1918.

"The weather is fine today and has been for a little time. We are most of us well too and as ever enjoying what is laid out
for us to do. We are always amusing ourselves in some way. The Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army are both doing well towards helping the boys out. The Red Cross is the best of all though. I will always say a good word for the Red Cross.
"Well I hope that the stock does well for Dad, and above all his crops."

LEO HALVERSON.
