This is a mere attempt to describe the work of the Brodhead
Red Cross during the war. No doubt certain statistics are
incomplete, because of incomplete records. Eleven women received
the Red Cross Service Insignia for working more than 800 hours,
in six months. These were Mesdames J. L. FLEEK, B. H. RODERICK,
I. H. HOWARD, W. W. LAWVER, F. M. TIES, E. H. COLE, A. R. BAXTER,
R. A. ATWOOD, P. L. DEDRICK, F. H. DEDRICK and M. L. KARNEY.
It is regrettable that there is not space in this article
to mention the names of all those who were associated so intimately
with its many activities during the war, who did so much
and gave so bountifully and nobly. But to have worked under the
greatest organization of mercy in the world will be their thanks.
The work of the Red Cross during the recent conflict will never
be forgotten; the work of "The Greatest Mother in the World"
will become a part of history just as truly as the sacrifices
and victories on Flanders Field. Possibly this is a fitting place
to quote the words of Cardinal Mercier:
"Such a national inspiration should be captured and
held for the benefit of all mankind."
