As April 15, 1921, the date of the second annual dance of
Swann-Gehr Post, 197, of the American Legion drew nearer,
the boys needing assistance felt this a very fitting time
for the organization of The Women's Auxiliary!
An invitation was extended by the Legion members to all those
eligible, namely, mothers, wives, daughters and sisters of
the members of the American Legion to meet with them at their
hall on the evening of March 24, 1921, for the purpose of discussing
the possibilities of an organization in Brodhead. There was a
good attendance at this meeting and plans were soon formulated
for making an application for a charter. Following this request,
application blanks were sent which when signed by fifteen promising
members, entitled them to a temporary charter.
Upon receipt of the charter a special meeting was called
on April 14, 1921, at which time officers were elected for the
year and work of organization was begun, which was completed
at a special meeting called for that purpose on May 19, 1921.
The American Legion made it possible for the Women's Auxiliary
to meet in the hall the Woodmen were now sharing
with them, until on September 29, 121, when they leased a
new home of their own and kindly asked the Women's Auxiliary,
which now consists of about eighty-five members, to meet with
them.
One of their first attempts in being of assistance to the
American Legion was to give a community shower to help furnish
their rooms, to which the public very generously responded.
While the duties of the Women's Auxiliary are varied their
first responsibility is taking care of the social activities
in the
Post for the members of the Legion and their relatives.
The first National Convention of the Women's Auxiliary was
held in Kansas City, and a permanent charter will soon be
