It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of one of Evansville's former residents the
details of which are too revolting to contemplate.
In the city of Madison, on last Monday night A. W. PATTERSON, well known in this
city, shot his wife and then put a bullet through his own temple. Mrs. [Hattie] PATTERSON was a daughter of the late Geo. MAGEE and was for many years identified with Evansville, having lived here during the life of her first husband, Mr. John SCHWAGER [SWAGER] and until her more recent marriage to Mr. PATTERSON.
Mr. PATTERSON's first wife's name was Julia MAGEE and in marrying Mr.
PATTERSON Mrs. SCHWAGER [SWAGER] felt that she was taking up her sister's burdens in helping to rear her five children.
The cause of the dual tragedy was undoubtedly insanity.
Neither Mr. nor Mrs. PATTERSON were conscious at all after the shooting although
the former lived three hours and the latter about twenty-seven hours.
The funeral services were held at Madison on Thursday interment occuring here in
Maple Hill cemetery the same day.
Mrs. PATTERSON was a member of the O.E.S. and that fraternity turned out in
large numbers to pay a last tribute to a faithful and highly esteemed member.
The relatives of the deceased have the sympathy of the entire community. [p. 1, col. 5]
