- Born: Sept. 7, '99, to Mr. and Mrs. J. H. BENNEY,
a daughter.
- Mr. and Mrs. J. P. PORTER have taken a little girl
three and a half years old to adopt. It is a very bright, sweet
child and is to be congratulated upon her new surroundings.
- Died, - Sept. 7, of brain fever, the infant daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. E. L. SEGUINE.
- Last Tuesday afternoon the remains of Mrs. Alzina A. PIERCE
late of Union, Rock
- Co., were laid away in the cemetery at Evansville. The funeral
services were conducted at her late home by Rev. Irving Towsley,
pastor of Universalist church in Stoughton. Old friends and neighbors,
and the members of the family filled the house and yard. Deceased
was born in Denmark, Lewis Co., N.Y., August 28, 1809. She came
to Rock County forty-seven years ago. Her husband died ten years
ago in Sept. Since that time she made her home with her daughter,
Mrs. COGGIN, at Union. She passed quietly away last Sunday
morning, being six days past her nintieth birthday. Mrs. PIERCE
had always been a woman of great intelligence and until injured
last June by a wound on her finger that gave her much pain was
a constant reader. She is survived by four sons and three daughters.
All were present at the funeral but one son. Her sons are Lucian,
of Clinton, Ia; A. W. of Rockford, Ill, Walter of Wessington
Springs, Dakota who was not able to be present and Flavus J.
Her daughters are Mrs. Lora GRIGGS, recently of Rockford,
Ill., who at present makes her home with her sister, Mrs. Ella
COGGIN of Union.
- Died: Tuesday, September 5, '99, Mr. Hiram VAN PATTEN,
of consumption, aged 58 years.
- Mr. VAN PATTEN was born Oct. 25, 1830, in the
State of New York and moved
- to this state with his parents in 1845 and has ever since
lived in Rock County. For twenty-five-years he has lived a highly
esteemed citizen of this place. For fifteen yaers he has been
a faithful member of the M. E. Church being a class leader for
eight years. He died as he had lived strong in the faith of the
Savior.
- The funeral which was held from the Methodist church Thursday
was largely attended
- by sympathizing friends and neighbors who assembled to pay
their last respects to a good man.
- He leaves a devoted wife, two sons and one daughter.
