The Evansville Review

July 1880

Evansville, Union Township, Rock County, Wisconsin

21
Freddie BACKENSTOE, aged ten years on the 17th day of September next,
youngest son of Geo. A. and Ellen M. [HOXIE] BACKENSTOE, died at 4 o'clock, Monday morning, July 19th, 1880, of malignant scarlet fever. Little Freddie was first attacked on Sunday evening, July 4th, with severe vomiting, but soon recovered and kept about most of the following day, witnessing the various sports of the celebration, and attended the fireworks in the evening; but feeling quite weak was supported by his father. The next morning he was more feeble with evident signs of scarlet fever, when a physician was sent for, but he continued to grow worse, and despite of all that kind friends and the best of nursing could do, an angel came and beckoned him away, "while the last star of evening yet lingered in the west, as a messenger to carry the glad news, that another star has risen to gild the constellation of heaven."
Freddie was the pet of the household, and a favorite with the boys of the neighborhood,
and generally beloved by all. It was a sad blow to parents and loving brothers and sisters, and friends will long cherish his memory. We think it was Dickens who said, "Oh, it is hard to take to heart the lesson that such deaths will teach; but let no man reject it, for it is one that all must learn, and it is a mighty universal truth. When death strikes down the innocent and young, for every fragile form from which he lets the parting spirit free, a hundred virtues rise, in shapes of Mercy, charity and Love, to walk the world and bless it. Of every tear that sorrowing mortals shed on such green graves, some good is born, some gentle nature comes."
The funeral was held at the residence, at 3 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, and largely
attended by citizens and friends of the family, and playmates of Freddie. The services were conducted by Rev. W. F. Brown, of the Congregational church choosing for his subject: 2d Kings, 4: 24: "It is well with thy child, and she said it is well."
The family express many thanks to the friends for their many acts of kindness shown
during this, their trying hour of sorrow. [p. 3, col. 5]
