- Mr. A. W. PATTERSON, of Madison sold last week 80
acres in the town of
- Brooklyn to Mr. LANG. [p. 1, col. 2]
- MURDER AND SUICIDE
- The most sad and painful death that has ever been our lot
to record was the sudden,
- strange and tragic death of our sister and her husband, Mr.
and Mrs. A. W. PATTERSON, which occurred at their home
in Madison, Wis., Monday evening, February 24, 1896, the husband,
Mr. PATTERSON, shooting his wife Hattie, and then sending
a bullet through his own brains. The cause for such an awful
and unpardonable act on his part will perhaps never be fully
known, as neither regained consciousness after the fatal shots
were fired, Mr. PATTERSON living three hours and his wife
lasting about twenty seven hours. The funeral services were held
today at Madison. The remains were brought to this city for interment
on the 2 o'clock train.
- The following was taken from the Madison State Journal of
Feb. 25, 1896: At a late
- hour this afternoon a reporter of the State Journal had a
brief interview with a lady friend of Mr. and Mrs. PATTERSON.
She said: "O, dear, the idea that Mrs. PATTERSON
was a party to the shooting. It is the sheerest nonsense. No,
indeed, the poor lady was too fond of her friends and life to
ever entertain such a thought." The lady added: "I
have known Mr. and Mrs. PATTERSON a long time, and I know
that they have lived very happily together. At times Mr. PATTERSON
complained that his head troubled him. He did not seem to be
able to control his thoughts. He would press his head and say
he did not know what could be the trouble." The lady with
deep feeling concluded by saying: "Mr. PATTERSON
was surely laboring under a fit of insanity when he did the shooting.
His poor wife had no suspicion of what was to be her terrible
fate. She has been unconscious ever since the occurrence, and
we are waiting for the end." [p. 1, col. 3]
