- Thomas Gleave died at his home in this city
Friday morning, at the age of 74 years.
- One by one the early pioneer is crossing the great divide
and the rank is lessening in
- numbers with rapidity. The subject of this sketch was one
of the early arrivals and came with his parents to this section
in 1846, when only eleven years of age. Of a strong constitution
with a determination to succeed, he strove with earnest zeal
to carve a name for himself. Of a retiring disposition, but with
a character for uprightness he followed the precepts of the golden
rule in his life work. He was a self dependent man and had strong
qualities for honesty of purpose and integrity. He is a man who
will not only be missed around the hearth of home, but likewise
in his frequent visits elsewhere.
- Thomas GLEAVE was born in Cheshire, England, March
4, 1835. Coming with his
- parents to this country in 1846, a farm life was taken up.
In January 1859, he was married to Miss Maria CRIDDLE
and to this union five children were born, three of whom survive,
the wife and mother having died in Nov. 1879. The children are
Cash GLEAVE of Madison, Mrs. Ed FIEDLER and Alice
GLEAVE of this city. For the past sixteen years Mr. GLEAVE
became a resident of this city, giving up farm work. Besides
the above, one brother, James GLEAVE of Tacoma, Wash.
is all that is left of a once happy family.
- Funeral services were held from the house Saturday afternoon,
the Rev. T. W. North
- officiating, and remains interred by the side of his wife.
- The pall bearers who officiated were Orlando GRIFFITH,
Ray GILLMAN, Sat
- BARNARD, Frank GRIFFITH, Byron CAMPBELL,
[and] Clint SCOFIELD.
- The out of town people in attendance were Irvin and George
CRIDDLE with their
- families from Oregon, and James BLISS, of Janesville.
