Ray GILLMAN, aged eighty-four, departed this life at his home on South First Street,
at 11:00 o'clock Wednesday evening.
Mr. GILLMAN was born in the Town of Turtle, near Beloit, October 13, 1842. At
the age of fourteen, Mr. GILLMAN moved to the town of Porter, later being united in marriage with Miss Sarah FELLOWS, of the town of Center, she passing to the Great Beyond ten years ago.
To this union there was born, two sons, Fred and Nay, of this city and Mrs. Idell
FRANTZ, who died at her home in Belvedere in 1924.
In 1869, Mr. GILLMAN moved to Evansville, engaging in the livery business from
1870 to 1887. In 1888 he founded the clothing business in which he has taken an active interest until stricken with the illness which caused his taking off. In this business he has had associated with him his sons Fred and Nay, for a number of years.
Mr. GILLMAN was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, the Knights Templars and
the Modern Woodmen.
The funeral services will take place at the home at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, the
Masonic lodge in charge, Rev. O. W. Smith officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill cemetery.
In the passing of Ray GILLMAN Evansville loses one of her most loved citizens. One
who has always had the interest of his town at heart and who in the many years of his residence here accomplished many things for her welfare.
It was through his efforts that the first fire company was organized in this city in the
year 1878, an organization of which he was a member for fifty years being its chief for thirty-eight years.
Mr. GILLMAN was a man of sterling integrity and high ideals and was a man
respected by all who knew him and had business dealings with him. In his passing there goes from business and lodge circles of Evansville a man which we, as citizens and brothers can ill afford to lose. [p. 1, col. 6]
