- OPERATION FATAL TO WILLIAM H. HALSTEAD
- Dies Monday Night in Madison Hospital After Linger Illness;
Buried Today
- William H. HALSTEAD, 76, a merchant here for many
years, died shortly after
- midnight Monday in St. Mary's hospital, Madison, following
an operation there on June 15. He had been failing in health
for the past year.
- Funeral service will be held in the Methodist Church here
at 2 p.m. today with the Rev.
- G. Kenneth MacInnis officiating. The burial services will
be conducted in Maple Hill cemetery by the Odd Fellows lodge
with members of the lodge as pallbearers.
- Mr. HALSTEAD was born and reared on a farm west of
Oregon and was married
- to Miss Ida FORD, Oregon, in 1876. Mrs. HALSTEAD,
who was an invalid for many years, died ten years ago. Mr. HALSTEAD
came to Evansville some 40 years ago where he was employed for
five years in the Harvey SMITH furniture store located
in the building formerly occupied by the American Express company
on East Main Street.
- He was later engaged in the painting business and was interested
in the ice business
- here for 15 years. He opened a general store on North Madison
street in 1915 where he handled a complete line of new and second
hand furniture and musical instruments and conducted the business
until his death.
- Mr. HALSTEAD was a member of the local Odd Fellows
lodge. He is survived by
- two brothers, Alfred and George HALSTEAD, this city
and two nieces, Mrs. Blanche WHITE, Belleflower, Calif.,
and Mrs. Mildred SHAW, Chicago. [pp. 1 & 8]
