- LOCAL LACONICS.
- Skating Saturday: Ice on the gas-house pond having
frozen to sufficient thickness to
- permit skating, several youths indulged in the winter sport
on Saturday. The ice on the main river is still thin and dangerous,
though several of the more venturesome boys have already tested
it.
- Gum Machine Stolen: Saturday evening the chewing-gum
slot-machine which has
- been located on the Court street side of the Kent block and
belongs to the HEIMSTREET drug store, was stolen. There
was a large quantity of the confection and about 500 pennies,
it is estimated, in the apparatus. No trace of the thief has
been found.
- Oscar Nowlan Improving: Former Postmaster Oscar F.
NOWLAN, who was
- stricken with paralysis several days ago, is now able to
sit up for a little while each day and is reported to be slowly
but steadily improving. This will be good news for his many friends.
- Drunks in Court: George TRIPP of Beloit and
Thomas LAVIN pleaded guilty to
- charges of drunkenness in municpal court this morning and
fines and costs amounting to $2.10, with alternatives of four
days in jail, were imposed. The fines were not paid. [p. 4,

- Daniel McKellips
- The funeral of the late Daniel McKELLIPS, who died
at the age of ninety-nine years
- and eight months, was held from the home in the town of Johnstown
Saturday afternoon. Rev. Ross of Rock Prairie officiated and
the song service was conducted by Mr. and Mrs. George GAREY,
John CLARK, and Mrs. BOYNTON. The pallbearers were
the grandsons and great-grandsons of the deceased. [p. 4,

- Mrs. Myra A. Mead
- Funeral services over the remains of the late Mrs. Myra A.
MEAD were held at the
- home, 176 Terrace street, yesterday afternoon at two o'clock,
Rev. R. C. Denison officiating. The pallbearers were James SHEARER,
H. L. McNAMARA, S. B. HEDDLES, David CONGER,
Charles EVANS and Charles YATES. Interment at Oak

- Mrs. Maria Bennett
- The funeral of the late Mrs. Maria BENNETT was held
from the home in the town of
- Harmony yesterday afternoon at half-past two o'clock. Rev.
Mr. Ross was the officiating clergyman and song services were
rendered by Mr. and Mrs. George CAREY, Mrs. BOYNTON,
and R. John CLARK. The pallbearers were Roberty, Myron
and Ezra CLARK, William BUTLER, L. N. CROSBY
and Ed DICKERSON. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery. [p.

- Infant of Mr. and Mrs. Scrivens
- The week-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will SCRIVENS
died yesterday and the
- remains were placed in a vault at Oak Hill cemetery this
afternoon, a private funeral being conducted at the home, 251
Center street, by Rev. J. H. Tippett. The bereaved parents have
the sympathy of a host of friends. [p. 4, col. 3]
- Infant of Mr. and Mrs. Passahl
- Mr. and Mrs. Herman PASSAHL, residing west of the
city, are mourning the loss of
- their infant child. Burial will be in the cemetery in the
town of Center. [p. 4, col. 3]
- Johnson Jackson
- Johnson A. JACKSON, secretary and treasurer of the
Kenosha Crib company, died
- at his home in Kenosha, Wis., yesterday, at the age of 49
years. For years he had been one of the most influential political
leaders in the First congressional district. He was a mason of
high degree. A widow and four children survive him. Mr. JACKSON
is well known in Janesville. [p. 4, col. 3]
