Rash of fires in early 1870s
The Big Mill, one of Janesville's earliest businesses, burned on June 29, 1871.
The loss was estimated at $45,000.
A year later, the ice skating rink at the corner of South Main and South Second streets, was lost
to fire. The passenger depot of the C&N Railway burned the day after the skating rink blaze. That building was located at Five Points.
