The Janesville Gazette

August 14, 1985; p. 10I

Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin

Fashion - Janesville Sesquicentennial

World War I ended
By 1918 "the boys" were fighting in the trenches and the Wisconsin Honor Roll was printed daily
in the Gazette. Soldiers from Camp Grant and the sailors from Great Lakes put on frequent entertain- ments at the Apollo Theater.
There were gasless Sundays, wheatless Mondays, war gardens and Liberty bond drives, but folks
could still laugh heartily at the antics of Frank Winniger in "Some Baby."
On Nov. 11 at 1:58 a.m. came the news of the armistice and all of Janesville went out and danced
on the streets for several hours. There were parades and bonfires all day. According to reports, "business was dispensed with and dignity forgotten."
