- John Norton DALAND, dean emeritus
of Milton College with which he was
- associated 54 years before resigning
in 1956 because of poor health, died Saturday morning, March
28, in Edgerton Memorial Hospital.
- Dean DALAND headed the college
history department for many years and served as
- acting president of the college on
two occasions - during 1927-28 and 1939-40. He was well-known
over a wide area as teacher and historian and was in demand as
a speaker.
- Thousands of students knew him as a
brilliant teacher, both kind and demanding in his
- classes.
- "Prof. John," as he was known
affectionately by students, came to Milton College in
- 1902 when his father, the late William
C. DALAND, became Milton's second president.
- Dean DALAND was graduated from
Milton in 1913 and earned his master's degree
- from the University of Wisconsin the
following year. He joined the college as a teacher of Latin,
later becoming professor of history and head of the history department.
- In 1940 Dean DALAND conducted
a series of programs on the world situation over
- radio station WCLO.
- The son of Dr. and Mrs. William C.
DALAND, he was born July 16, 1885, in
- Elizabeth, N.J. He married Nellie
FURROW, Riverside, Calif., June 24, 1914. He was active
in the Seventh Day Baptist Church and headed the board at the
time the church was built here 1932-33.
- Surviving are his wife; a daughter,
Elizabeth, at home; a son, Prof. Robert DALAND,
- University of Connecticut, Storrs,
Conn.; two brothers, Alexander of Rockford, and Clifton, of Battle
Creek, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. F. G. HALL, Durham, N.C.,
and two grandsons.
- The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday
in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church,
- the Rev. Elmo Fitz Randolph officiating.
The College Choir, directed by Prof. B. H. WESTLUND,
sang and Edward J. ROOD was organist. Burial was in
Milton Cemetery, pallbearers being college faculty members, William
A. CORNELL, Leland W. HULETT, L. Milton VAN
HORN, Harold H. JAMES, William D. BURDICK and
Leland C. SHAW. [Thursday edition, p. 1]
