- Merrifield
closes on 100th anniversary
- The Merrifield School had its last
- picnic this past May 27 bringing to
an end of a full century of the school's operation. It is now
part of Junction District No. 1, integrated with all other schools
in the
- surrounding area.
|
- The first meeting was held July 24, 1862. The board of Supervisors
of Milton and
- Fulton Township formed the District July 17, 1862 and called
it Jt. District No. 6.
- The supervisors signing the order of the first annual meeting
were T. WALKER and
- George W. OGDEN for the Town of Milton and J. S. HOPKINS,
S. BRACE, and G. D. SHERMAN for the Town of Fulton.
- The first annual meeting elected David McCULLOUGH,
director, S. C. CARR,
- treasurer, and S. T. ROGERS, clerk.
- At the first meeting it was decided that a suitable triangular
parcel of land could be
- obtained from S. T. ROGERS, one acre in size for $25.
It was also decided at this first meeting that they would build
a 24x30 frame school house. Also at this first meeting $300 was
voted, to be raised by taxpayers to cover the cost of the building.
- The school house was built with people of the district supplying
the labor at a rate of
- $1 per day. The fuel to heat this school was to be supplied
by the lowest bidder, of good seasoned wood cut to stove length.
- The old record books show that Miranda S. SAUNDER
[SAUNDERS?] was the
- first teacher. She taught the winter term consisting of [three
months for $52. In 1864 wages had risen to $22. per month including
board in the neighborhood.]
- [In 1864 the state aid for the year was $34.]
- In later years the name of Merrifield was attached to the
school. The last teacher to
- teach at Merrifield was Miss Helen BURGESS from LaValle,
Wis. The last school board members were William CUNNINGHAM,
Rolf VIEN and Arthur OLSON.
