Lawrence J[ohn] DICKHOFF, 63, Milton's foremost civic leader, died unexpectedly
Saturday at Methodist Hospital, Madison, the victim of a heart failure. He had been hospitalized since Sept. 17 after suffering an apparent stroke and had appeared to be in steadily improving condition until the sudden coronary attack early Saturday afternoon.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from St. Mary's Catholic Church,
Janesville, with Fr. James McEnery of St. Mary Church, Milton, officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Janesville.
Mr. DICKHOFF was chairman of the Milton College board of trustees and was, in
effect, the primary architect of the city of Milton, the merger of the two villages. He had led the trustees since 1962, directing the school through its largest era of growth and was busy at the time of his death in resolving its financial difficulties. As a Milton Junction village president he had instituted the cooperative efforts towards the merger of the two villages in 1967 and served as the new municipality's first mayor.
He had received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from his alma mater, Milton
College, at a special convocation last Wednesday, just three days before his death.
In the business world he had owned and operated DICKHOFF Chevrolet Sales for
the past 37 years and had earned a great variety of dealership awards. He was also vice president of The Farmers Bank and had served as a bank director for the past 20 years.
He had received the Milton College Alumni Pillar of Milton award in 1969 and was
honored as Citizen of the Year here in 1973 by the Milton Kiwanis Club, of which he was a charter member.
He had also served on the Rock county board of supervisors from 1949 to 1959; as a
Milton Junction village trustee from 1949 to 1961 when he was elected village president; as a member of the Milton Union high school board for six years, and as a member of the Sinnissippi Boy Scout Council, the General Motors Great Lakes regional dealers council, the state health and planning council, the Milton Association of Commerce and the Junction Shopping Center Association.
He was a member of the Janesville Country Club and a member and past president of
the Whitewater Country Club.
Mr. DICKHOFF was born July 9, 1911, in Lima township, the son of Theodore and
Mary JENNINGS DICKHOFF. He was a graduate of Milton Union high school and a 1933 graduate of Milton College.
On June 16, 1937, he was married to Margaret CONNELL of Janesville in St. Mary's
Catholic Church, Janesville. He was a member of St. Mary Church, Milton.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, two daughters, Mary Ellen (Mrs. William)
STAFFORD, Greenville, Mich., and Joann Kay, Madison; and two grandsons.
Active pallbearers at services Wednesday were Stuart SHADEL, Arnie AGNEW,
Gordon WIXOM, Dexter MUNSON, Hubert WRIGHT and Harry BUHROW. [Thursday edition, p. 1]
