- Lawrence J[ohn] DICKHOFF, 63,
Milton's foremost civic leader, died unexpectedly
- Saturday at Methodist Hospital, Madison,
the victim of a heart failure. He had been hospitalized since
Sept. 17 after suffering an apparent stroke and had appeared
to be in steadily improving condition until the sudden coronary
attack early Saturday afternoon.
- Funeral services were held Wednesday
morning from St. Mary's Catholic Church,
- Janesville, with Fr. James McEnery
of St. Mary Church, Milton, officiating. Burial was in Mount
Olivet Cemetery, Janesville.
- Mr. DICKHOFF was chairman of
the Milton College board of trustees and was, in
- effect, the primary architect of the
city of Milton, the merger of the two villages. He had led
the trustees since 1962, directing the school through its largest
era of growth and was busy at the time of his death in resolving
its financial difficulties. As a Milton Junction village president
he had instituted the cooperative efforts towards the merger
of the two villages in 1967 and served as the new municipality's
first mayor.
- He had received an honorary Doctor
of Laws degree from his alma mater, Milton
- College, at a special convocation last
Wednesday, just three days before his death.
- In the business world he had owned
and operated DICKHOFF Chevrolet Sales for
- the past 37 years and had earned a
great variety of dealership awards. He was also vice president
of The Farmers Bank and had served as a bank director for the
past 20 years.
- He had received the Milton College
Alumni Pillar of Milton award in 1969 and was
- honored as Citizen of the Year here
in 1973 by the Milton Kiwanis Club, of which he was a charter
member.
- He had also served on the Rock county
board of supervisors from 1949 to 1959; as a
- Milton Junction village trustee from
1949 to 1961 when he was elected village president; as a member
of the Milton Union high school board for six years, and as a
member of the Sinnissippi Boy Scout Council, the General Motors
Great Lakes regional dealers council, the state health and planning
council, the Milton Association of Commerce and the Junction
Shopping Center Association.
- He was a member of the Janesville Country
Club and a member and past president of
- the Whitewater Country Club.
- Mr. DICKHOFF was born July 9,
1911, in Lima township, the son of Theodore and
- Mary JENNINGS DICKHOFF.
He was a graduate of Milton Union high school and a 1933 graduate
of Milton College.
- On June 16, 1937, he was married to
Margaret CONNELL of Janesville in St. Mary's
- Catholic Church, Janesville. He was
a member of St. Mary Church, Milton.
- He is survived by his wife, Margaret,
two daughters, Mary Ellen (Mrs. William)
- STAFFORD,
Greenville, Mich., and Joann Kay, Madison; and two grandsons.
- Active pallbearers at services Wednesday
were Stuart SHADEL, Arnie AGNEW,
- Gordon WIXOM, Dexter MUNSON,
Hubert WRIGHT and Harry BUHROW. [Thursday
