Edward M[anning] ELLIS, 66, 301 W. Dean, Monona, former vice president of the
Milton College board of trustees, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, at St. Mary Hospital, Madison, after an apparent heart attack.
Mr. ELLIS was born Aug. 11, 1909, in Shiloh, New Jersey, the son of George M.
and Phoebe DAVIS ELLIS and came to Milton at the age of three. He attended school in Milton and graduated from Milton College in 1932 with a Ph.B. in Economics.
He married the former Ruth BROWN Aug. 29, 1929 at Marion, Ohio. She died April
11, 1969. A Ruth BROWN ELLIS Memorial Scholarship was established at Milton College in her memory. She was also a 1932 graduate of Milton College.
Mr. ELLIS served as a 2nd Lt. in WW II in the Signal Corp. from 1941 to 1944 and
was a member of the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church.
He was elected to the Milton College board of trustees in 1960 and during his tenure
served as vice president of the board and chairman of the development committee. In July, 1975, he was elected an honorary member of the board.
In 1970, ELLIS was given the "Pillar of Milton" alumni award, the highest honor
bestowed by the college to an alumnus. He was president and chairman of the board of Johnson Welding and Equipment Co., Madison, and a member of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, Wisconsin Manufacturer's Assn., Wisconsin Petroleum Assn., and National Assn. of Oil Equipment Jobbers.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Frances BISHOP, 1656 Capitol Dr., Madison; and
one niece, LeAlyce KARDASZ, Stoughton.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, at the Seventh Day Baptist
Church, Milton, with Rev. Earl Cruzan officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:30 until time of service at the church. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery. A memorial fund will be established. [Thursday edition, p. 1]
