- Elston [Edwin] SHAW, 74, of
217 Plumb Street, long-time Milton resident, died
- Monday, May 23, at Mercy Hospital of
an apparent heart attack.
- He was born Aug. 7, 1902 in Milton,
the son of Edwin and Nellie CAMPBELL
- SHAW
and married the former Emma MAXSON Dec. 25, 1927. She
died Jan. 7, 1959. On Aug. 1, 1959, he married Dorothy MAXSON.
- Mr. SHAW attended schools in
Plainfield, N.J., and later attended Salem Academy,
- Salem, W. Virginia and Milton College.
He was employed as a display manager in department stores in
Streeter, Ill., Port Huron, Mich., and Mansfield, Ohio before
the depression and then operated the E & E Stationary Store,
Milton, until 1946. Prior to his retirement, he was employed
by Gibb Mfg., as a printer.
- He was a member of the Seventh Day
Baptist Church, Milton Historical Society, and
- Milton Masonic Lodge #161. He also
operated the Milton County Store, in conjunction with the Milton
House, for the past several years.
- Survivors include his wife; one son,
Edwin, Milton; one brother, Leland, Milton; two
- sisters, Mrs. Elton BINGHAM,
Milton, and Miss Stephana SHAW, Milton; three grandchildren
and one great-grandson.
- Services will be held at 2 p.m., today,
Thursday, May 26, at Seventh Day Baptist
- Church with Rev. Earl Cruzan officiating.
- Burial will be held at Milton Cemetery.
The family has requested that memorials be
- made to the church in lieu of flowers.
- Albrecht Funeral Home is in charge

- Mrs. Leslie J. BENNETT, 76,
of 317 E. Milwaukee St., Whitewater, died at
- Countryside Home, Jefferson, on Wednesday,
May 18 after a long illness.
- The former Ruth Emily SAYRE
was born June 26, 1900 at Milton, the daughter of
- Florence and George SAYRE.
She was baptized and joined the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church
as a young girl. She was a graduate of Milton high school and
the Rock Rural Normal, and taught school in the Lima-Whitewater
area. She was married to Leslie J. BENNETT Aug. 18,
1921. He died in 1964.
- Music was a very important part of
her life. She taught piano to scores of young
- people in many communities. Her family
was known for its musical excellence, and often presented programs.
She played the organ in various churches. She was active
in volunteer work and learned to copy orchestral compositions
in Braille for the Wisconsin School for the Blind in Janesville.
She was active in the Whitewater Senior Citizens group.
- Surviving are a daughter, Patricia
GERMAINE, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons,
- Merland of Ravenna, Ohio and Milton
of Moline, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; five great- grandchildren;
a sister, Mrs. Ethlyn SHADEL, Milton; three brothers,
Gerry SAYRE, Milton, Merton, Roswell, N. Mex. and Paul,
Gig Harbor, Wash.
- A daughter, Joann CONSIDINE
died in 1956.
- The memorial service, "A Celebration
for a Life," was conducted by her grandson,
- Fr. James CONSIDINE of the Episcopal
Church in Warwick, R.I., assisted by Earl Cruzan, Milton, and
Rev. Mitchell CONSIDINE, McHenry, Ill. The program,
a verbal and musical tribute to his mother, was planned by Merland
BENNETT. Participants were Merland, his wife and two
small sons, the CONSIDINE grandsons and granddaughters
who presented vocal solos, duets, a girls trio, and a quartet,
singing selections loved by the deceased.
- Organ solos by Betty DALAND
included numbers from the oratories "Elijah" and
- "Messiah."
- The services were held from the Milton
Seventh Day Baptist Church with four
- grandsons, Daniel, Steven, David and
Rev. Mitchell CONSIDINE, as pallbearers. Burial was
in Milton Cemetery. [Thursday edition, p. 8]
