Albert "Gerry" [Gerald] SAYRE, 92, of 104 E. High St., Milton, died Thursday,
Sept. 6, 1990 in Memorial Community Hospital in Edgerton.
He was born Nov. 18, 1897 in Nortonville, Kansas, the son of George Oliver and
Florence BARNHART SAYRE. Mr. SAYRE graduated from Milton College in 1923. He taught school and coached in Illinois, and at Cook Academy and Storm King School in New York.
During World War I, he enlisted in the Navy and served as a radio operator aboard
warships and submarines. Mr. SAYRE also enlisted in World War II, rising to the rank of commander. Since 1919 he has been active as an amateur radio operator. Mr. SAYRE joined the McGregor Artic Expedition in 1936 as its radio operator and lone contact with the outside world.
Mr. SAYRE later worked for the Rock County Sheriff's Department, installing their
first radio system in cars. He worked as an electronics engineer at Arlington Hall Station and at the National Security Agency. Mr. SAYRE retired in 1960, after 20 years of accumulative federal service dating back to World War I. He served as commanding officer of a naval reserve group in the Washington, D.C. area for a period of time.
Mr. SAYRE married Iva Marie SCHRADER LIPPINCOTT in 1940; she died in
November, 1987. Mr. SAYRE loved all sports and had been inducted into the Milton College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church, American Legion, Retired Officers' Association, Society of Wireless Pioneers, American Radio Relay League, Odd Fellows and Masons. He served as president of the Milton Historical Society.
Mr. SAYRE is survived by one brother, G. Merton SAYRE of Roswell, N.M.; one
sister, Ethlyn SHADEL of Milton; one grandson, Gerry LIPPINCOTT of Milton; two great-grandchildren, William and Jennifer LIPPINCOTT of Milton; and one daughter-in-law, Ernestine LINNES of Watertown.
A memorial service was in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church Monday, Sept. 10.
Memorials may be made to the Heart Association. Albrecht Funeral Home of Milton handled the arrangements. [Thursday edition, p. 24]

Ernest Dale HURLEY, 80, of South Beloit, Ill., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1990 at
Rockford Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Garwin, Iowa on Nov. 22, 1909. Mr. HURLEY graduated from
Garwin High School. He was a former resident of Milton, before moving to Rockton, Ill. Mr. HURLEY married Beatrice HARDY on Feb. 12, 1943 in Belvidere, Ill. She preceded him in death in 1974. He operated HURLEY's Garage for many years in Rockton before retiring to South Beloit. Mr. HURLEY was a World War II veteran and belonged to the American Legion. He enjoyed singing, playing the organ and reciting poems.
He is survived by his son, Andy of Rockton, Ill.; two grandchildren, Kellie and Robert;
one sister, Eileen BEERS of Memphis, Tenn.; one brother, Wilton (Mary) HURLEY of Bellflower, Calif.; and special friend, Terry PETERSON.
Funeral services are Thursday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Albrecht Funeral Home in Milton.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of the service. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery. [Thursday edition, p. 24]
