- Leland C[ampbell] SHAW, 95,
professor of English at Milton College for 48 years,
- died Monday, Oct. 5, 1992 at Memorial
Community Hospital, Edgerton.
- He was born March 3, 1897 in Milton,
the son of Dr. Edwin B. and Nellie
- (CAMPBELL) SHAW. He attended
schools in Milton and Plainfield, N.J., graduating from Milton
College in 1919. He was married to Vera COON on Sept.
3, 1921. She died on July 20, 1981.
- After attending graduate school at
the University of Wisconsin, he taught at Salem
- College, Salem W.V. and at Elwood,
Ind. prior to joining the teaching staff at Milton College in
1924, where he taught until retiring in 1972.
- While at Milton College, he served
on the Athletic Board, and was the first recipient
- of the college's "Pillar of Milton"
award. The SHAW Memorial Library Building was named for
him and his father, who also taught at Milton College. He was
a long-time member of the Milton Junction Seventh Day Baptist
Church. He was a charter member of the Southern Wisconsin, Northern
Illinois Gladiola Society. Well known as a grower and judge of
gladiolas, he judged at flower shows at the Wisconsin State Fair
for many years.
- He was a member of the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows. He was a charter
- member of the Republican Presidential
task force.
- He is survived by one sister, Stephana
SHAW of Milton, and nieces and nephews.
- He was preceded in death by his wife,
one sister and one brother.
- Private services are being arranged
by Albrecht Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert
- Saunders officiating. Burial will be
in Milton Cemetery. A memorial is being established in his name.
