L[ester] Milton VAN HORN, 88, of Milton, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at
home.
He was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Brookfield, N.Y., the son of Herbert C. VAN
HORN and Abigail BABCOCK VAN HORN. He married Mary VAN HORN on May 6, 1933, in Maryland; she preceded him in death Oct. 2, 1961. He married Ruth REDLAND on Sept. 22, 1967, at St. Augustine by the Sea Episcopal Church in Santa Monica, Calif.
Milton graduated from Bound Brook High School, New Jersey, in 1931. He
received B.A. and B.S. degrees in 1935 from Salem College, West Virginia, and a M.S. degree in 1936 from West Virginia University. He continued post graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 1937 through 1982, he taught at Milton College as professor of biology, serving as department chairman from 1955 until 1982, and dean of the college from 1955 until 1963. During World War II, in addition to teaching at the college, he was a meteorology instructor for Navy personnel and worked nights manufacturing military shells at the converted Oldsmobile Division-Fisher Body plant in Janesville. He served as Milton Village Treasurer from 1953 until 1961 and was a member of the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church. From his retirement in 1982 until his death he continued to lead an active outdoor life. He cultivated a large garden and orchard and was an avid camper, hunter, fisherman and naturalist.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; six children: Rachel VAN HORN and husband,
Karl HICKEY of Denver, Colo., Jonathan VAN HORN of St. Paul, Minn., Robert (Rita) VAN HORN of Kansasville, Judith (Rolland) MAXSON of San Clemente, Calif., David VAN HORN of Shannock, R.I., Peter (Penny) VAN HORN of Pewaukee; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Elston; and a sister, Stella GAUCH.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Milton
Seventh Day Baptist Church. rev. Elmo FitzRandolph will officiate. Interment will follow at the Milton Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend these events and greet the family at 6:30 p.m. at The Gathering Place. Memorials may be made to Quetico Foundation, Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, Wisconsin Public Radio, Rock County Conservationists or Main Hall Preservation Society.
