- Mabel M. SMITH, 99, of 901 W.
Milton Ave., Milton, died Tuesday, Nov. 11,
- 2003 at Rock Haven, Janesville, following
a short illness.
- She was born June 6, 1904 to Charles
and Lena (PROBST) VOGEL in Beloit, but
- lived in the Milton area most of her
life. She married George W. SMITH on Jan. 29, 1927. She
graduated from Milton Union High School and attended Rock Co.
Normal School. She was a member of the Milton Methodist Church.
She had been a country school teacher early in her life, a farmer's
wife and had other jobs later until she retired.
- She is survived by two daughters, Geraldine
SMITH and Donna (Earl D.) YOUNG,
- both of Milton; a sister, Lenore EDWARDSON
of Milton; 10 grandchildren: Earl R. YOUNG, Janis FRANK,
Veronica (Jon) BUE, all of Milton, Mary Beth YOUNG,
Richard YOUNG, both of Janesville, William (Karla) YOUNG
of Porter, Tex., David YOUNG of Bradford, Penn., Cindy
JOHNSON of South Beloit, Ill., Kelly SMITH of Fort
Wayne, Ind., and Dawn (Mark) FIELDS of Rockton, Ill.;
11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her sister, Ethel
FOREMAN; her brother, Ira VOGEL and her son and
daughter-in-law, Allen SMITH and Julie SMITH.
- Funeral services were held Friday,
Nov. 14, 2003 at the Albrecht Funeral Home.
- Pastors Glenn Skatrud and Tom Moe officiated.
Burial was in the Milton Junction Cemetery. [Thursday edition]
- Harvey [Myron] JOHNSON, 89,
a life-long resident of Milton, died Sunday, Nov.
- 16, 2003 at his home.
- He was born Dec. 18, 1913 in Milton,
the oldest child of Elwyn and Ethel
- (McDOWELL) JOHNSON. He
graduated from Milton Union High school in 1931 and from Milton
College in 1936. He was employed by the Burdick Corporation and
then the Schlueter Company in Janesville for many years where
he acted as engineer, purchasing agent and equipment photographer
until his retirement in 1978. He was active in civic affairs
for many years. He served as Milton Justice of the Peace in the
1950s, performing marriages in his home. He was a member of the
Milton Village Board during the time of the merger with Milton
Junction in the 1960s and was elected to the first Milton City
Council. He also served as a member of the Milton School Board,
Police and Fire Commission, Zoning Appeals Board and the Milton
Cemetery Association at different times in his public service.
He played trumpet in dance bands that performed around Wisconsin
and northern Illinois while in high school and college. He was
also a member of the Milton Civic Band, playing many concerts
in the old bandstand in Milton Park. Interested in amateur radio
(call letters W9VYW) since the early days of radio communications
in the 1920s he enjoyed building and testing his own radio equipment
for talking with people around the world. During wartimes he
provided Milton area residents the opportunity to talk with relatives
serving overseas via his short wave radio equipment. Amateur
astronomy was also a favorite hobby. He built his own telescopes
and shared close-up views of the moon and planets with local
scout groups.
- He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth
SKELLY of Milton, a brother, Robert (Charlotte)
- of Plymouth; son Peter (Ileah) of Edgerton,
daughter Polly JONES of Milton and son Paul (Leslie) of
Monona; eight grandchildren: Brian, Steven and James JOHNSON,
Kristine CHAPADOS, Deborah DEAN, Michael JONES,
Pamela HINES and Teresa DRAYS; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Eleanor (OLSBYE)
in 1999 and his brother Roger in 2002.
- Funeral services will be held today,
Thursday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. at First
- Congregational Church. Rev. Herbert
E. Saunders will officiate. Visitation will be at the church
from 12:30 p.m. until time of the service. Burial will be in
the Milton Cemetery. Albrecht Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
