[Mabel] Jeanette PLACE, 88, was born on September 24, 1916 in Milton,
Wisconsin and died on April 3, 2005 in a nursing home in Lafayette, La.
Her maternal grandfather, William WHITTET, was a builder of many of the homes
and offices in Milton that still stand today. Her paternal grandfather, George COON, was a supervisor of insurance agents for the Northwestern Mutual Insurance Co. in Milton Jct. As he traveled from city to city, he and other Christian men met after supper in boarding houses to discuss Biblical teaching. From these meetings the men founded the organization known as the Gideons. Jeanette's father, Ross COON, had a 45 year career as an insurance agent also in Milton. Her mother, Maude WHITTET COON, was a homemaker.
During her youth, Jeanette enjoyed Girl Scouts, her church youth group, snow skiing,
and swimming at a local lake. She attended Milton College [Class of 1938] and while a freshman, she met and began dating her future husband, Dick PLACE, who was a senior at Milton College [Class of 1935] majoring in Chemistry. She taught history and English at the Harwood School in Albuquerque, NM, a resident school for Indian girls. During these days of teaching, her future husband, Dick, followed her to New Mexico and worked for a pest control company. They returned to Wisconsin and were married in 1939.
At the beginning of World War II, Dick enlisted in the Army and attended Biological
and Chemical Warfare school in Alabama. He and Janette were then stationed on Staten Island, NY where Dick tested the water on troop ships to assure that the enemy had not poisoned it. Jeanette worked in a hospital serving and helping German POWs. After discharge from the Army, they moved to Waukegan, IL where Dick began work as a Quality Control Chemist for John-Manville Corp. In 1948 they were transferred to Natchez, MS, where they resided for over 50 years.
Jeanette was a member of the Christian Science church. She remained very active
in her church until the late 1990's, serving as lay reader, librarian, member of the board of directors, and annually attending national meetings in Boston and Atlanta. She also was a Cub Scout Den Mother for five years, PTA room mother and officer, and school band parent and chaperone. She was on the Board of Directors of the Natchez Children's Home, a position she held for over 35 years. In that position she sponsored one of the resident children, tutoring them several afternoons each week, having them in her home and taking them on trips.
Jeanette was a 45 year member of the Pilgrimage Garden Club, served on the
National Beautification Committee, and was a founding member of the Natchez Musical Arts League. As a member of the Garden Club, she participated each March and October in the well-known Natchez Pilgrimage. She dressed in antebellum costume and explained to tourists the history of two antebellum homes owned by friends.
