- John Hill BABCOCK, familiarly known as "Uncle
Johny," passed away at his home in
- Milton, Wis., on Wednesday afternoon, March 31, 1926. He
had been seriously sick for six months. The first sixteen weeks
of that period he spent at Mercy hospital, Janesville. Since
that time he has been tenderly cared for at his home in Milton.
- Mr. Babcock was a son of Thomas and Jane HILL BABCOCK,
and was born in
- Shelby county, Ohio, November 16, 1846. In the fall of 1857
the family moved to Welton, Iowa. He received his education in
the public schools, a private school at De Witt, Iowa, and at
Milton College.
- He made Christian confession and became a member of the Seventh
Day Baptist
- church, Welton, Iowa, in the fall of 1858, and through life
he has been a devout and active member of that denomination.
- Mr. BABCOCK was married April 8, 1871, to Miss Wilametta
Jane PLATTS. Mr.
- and Mrs. BABCOCK have spent all their married life
at North Loup, Nebraska, and at Milton, Wisconsin. Their residence
has been at Milton since 1897. They lost two infant boys, one
at Farina, Ill., and one at North Loup.
- Mr. BABCOCK is survived by his wife, two daughters:
Mrs. Charles
- THORNGATE, Exeland, Wis.; and Mrs. W. Ray ROOD,
Riverside, Calif.; and by seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
- Mr. BABCOCK taught school for several years and was
a carpenter by trade.
- He enlisted in the Union army on Jan. 24, 1864, as a private
in Company A, Eighth
- Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, at Davenport, Iowa. He
was discharged as a private at Davenport about the 25th of October,
1865. Mr. BABCOCK says in a short sketch of his army life,
"The most important events in my service were in the siege
and capture of Spanish Fort, Ala.; Pleasant Hill, La.; and Henderson
Hill, La." He participated in several other engagements.
He was not wounded or taken prisoner at any time during his term
of service.
- The funeral was held from the home, and from the Milton Seventh
Day Baptist church
- at 2:30 Saturday, April 3. Burial was made in the Milton

- Mrs. Alice HERRINGTON was born in the town of Lima,
Nov. 25, 1846, and died
- April 15, 1926, in Albion at the home of Mrs. Eliza SMITH,
who has tenderly and devoutly cared for her since last June.
- Mrs. HERRINGTON was the daughter of William P. and
Mary A. STILLMAN.
- She was united in marriage to Sylvester HERRINGTON
Jan. 21st, 1873, at Lima, and he preceded her in death 37 years
ago.
- In early life she united with the Seventh Day Baptist church
at Milton. Later she
- transferred her membership to the Milton Junction church,
and remained a loyal member until her death.
- Mrs. HERRINGTON is survived by two sons, William L.,
of Lima, and Chester D.
- of Milton Junction; one sister, Mrs. Ella ELPHICK
of Whitewater, and two grandchildren, Rachel and Alice of Madison.
- Mrs. HERRINGTON was a devoted mother and kind neighbor,
and will be greatly
- missed by those who are left to mourn her loss.
- Funeral services were held last Sabbath afternoon at 4 o'clock
in the Milton Junction
- S.D.B. church, with the Rev. J. L. Skaggs, pastor of the
Milton S.D.B. church officiating. Burial was made in the Milton
Junction cemetery.
- The pall bearers were James HERRINGTON, John PATTERSON,
Charles
- HUDSON, Charles BROWN, Harry TRUMAN
and Fred HUNT.
- Those from away who attended the funeral were: Frank STILLMAN,
St. Paul, Minn.;
- Mr. and Mrs. Sol HERRINGTON and son Ralph, Beloit;
Geo. HERRINGTON, Janesville; Mr. and Mrs. James HERRINGTON,
Albion; besides many friends from Whitewater, Lima, Milton and
Albion. [Thursday edition, p. 1]
- William Lonson CRANDALL died at his home in Milton,
April 15, 1926. He was
- born May 6, 1849, at Deansboro, Oneida county, N.Y., the
son of James and Sarah GOODSON CRANDALL. At the
age of seven he came with his parents to Wisconsin where they
settled near Fort Atkinson. A few years later they moved to the
township of Harmony where he lived until moving to Milton in
1906.
- He was married to Miss Alice GRISWOLD, March 12, 1876,
and she died Feb. 28,
- 1899. He is survived by eight children, Oscar, William, Ray,
Mrs. Bessie RICE, Mrs. Grace EVANS, Mrs. Ivan RICE,
Miss Josephine and Miss Jessie. He is also survived by a sister,
Mrs. E. A. WILCOX of Johnstown and a brother Jesse M.
CRANDALL, of Corona, Calif.
- Mr. CRANDALL served as supervisor in Harmony for a
number of years and on the
- school board in District No. 7 for 23 consecutive years.
He served for a term of years as village trustee in Milton, and
as president of the board. April, 1917, he became a member of
the county board and served until he resigned in Nov., 1923,
on account of poor health, and to visit his sons in California.
The funeral services were held Saturday, April 17th, at the home.
Rev. Anton Hatlestad officiated. Burial was in the Milton Cemetery.
