- Benedict Wescott ROGERS was born October 9, 1859,
in the vicinity of Milton
- Junction. His parents were Lester T. ROGERS and
Sarah Melissa COON ROGERS, who moved to the village
during his early years. After attending schools in this locality
he graduated from the Medical Department of the University of
Illinois in 1885, and practiced medicine and surgery in Chicago
and Oakland, Calif.
- He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the outbreak of the World
War, and served as
- director of the Tuberculosis department at Camp Zachary Taylor
for 19 months. He then entered the United States Public Health
Service and served as Medical Chief in the United States Veterans
Bureau stationed at Omaha, Neb., and at Springfield, Mo.
- Mr. ROGERS returned to this vicinity Nov. 1924.
He has been in failing health for
- over a year and passed away at 8:30 p.m., June 29.
- He is survived by a widow, daughter, Mrs. Mabel GODSHAW,
and granddaughter,
- Elizabeth GODSHAW.
- The funeral was held this, Thursday, afternoon. Rev. Anton
Hatlestad of the M.E.
- church officiated. The American Legion had charge of the
services at the grave. Burial was in the Milton Junction cemetery.

- Susan Emily GARTHWAITE, daughter of William and Elizabeth
BURDICK
- PIERCE, was born at Alfred, N.Y., March 3, 1848, and
died at her home in Milton Junction, Wis., July 19, 1926, at
the age of 78 years, 4 months and 16 days.
- She was the only daughter and the eldest of a family of four
children. As her mother
- died when she was fifteen years old, she had the care of
two younger brothers and took the place of a mother with them.
- The family came to Wisconsin in February, 1865, where she
has lived ever since,
- residing all these years in the Town of Milton.
- During the winter of 1866, she was baptized by the late J.
C. ROGERS, and united
- with the Rock River Seventh Day Baptist church where she
retained her membership until uniting with the church of the
same faith in Milton Junction.
- On October 17, 1868, she was united in marriage with Orson
C. GARTHWAITE.
- Two children were born to them, Perry Fred, who died about
a year and a half ago, and Mercy E., who lives in the home in
Milton Junction.
- Besides the husband and daughter, she is survived by three
grandsons, Harlow
- GARTHWAITE of Chicago, and Bernard and Byron GARTHWAITE
of Rockford, and three great-grandchildren. There are also
two brothers, Luther W. PIERCE of Danbury, Iowa, and Samuel
PIERCE of Medena, Minn., as well as many other relatives.
- Mrs. GARTHWAITE was a woman of sterling character,
always ready to do her
- part in the community. She was deeply interested in the
work of the church, the Ladies Aid and other benevolent work.
She was a constituent member of the W.R.C. and for many years
was an active member of the W.C.T.U.
- Funeral services will be held in the S.D.B. church Friday
afternoon at 2:30 and will
- be conducted by her former pastor, Erlo E. Sutton. [Thursday
