- Martina Mason LANPHERE, Milton, died in Edgerton Memorial
hospital Sunday
- morning following an illness of several months. He was
taken to the hospital last Friday.
- Mr. LANPHERE was the last of the family of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W.
- LANPHERE, his brother Stiles R. having preceded him
in death. Born March 18, 1865, in Ceres, Penn., he came to
Milton with his parents in 1876. In 1887 the family went to
South Dakota where they took up land.
- On March 12, 1891, Martina was married to Ella WALTON
at Flandreau, S.D.
- They and their children lived in Nebraska and Arkansas before
coming to Milton in 1907. Since that time Mr. LANPHERE
had been custodian of the grounds with the exception of one year
when he was janitor at Milton state graded school.
- "Jan," as he was known, is mourned by faculty and
students alike and during the time
- his body lay in state in his home on College street, the
stars and stripes were at half mast at the college.
- Mr. LANPHERE is survived by his wife and two children,
Leta at home and Leo at
- Easton, Penn.
- Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Milton
S.D.B. church, Rev.
- Carroll L. Hill and Dr. Edwin Shaw officiating. Kenneth
BABCOCK sang two selections. Burial was in the family
lot in Milton cemetery. Pallbearers were six college professors
- D. N. INGLIS, W. D. BURDICK, L. C. SHAW,
L. H. STRINGER, C. F. OAKLEY and Geo. H. CRANDALL.
- Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral
were Leo LANPHERE,
