A double funeral was held in the Gray and Albrecht funeral home this afternoon for
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. BUTEN, the Rev. J. F. Randolph officiating. Mrs. BUTEN died at 12:30 a.m. Monday and Mr. BUTEN about 46 hours later at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday. Mrs. BUTEN had been failing in health several years while Mr. BUTEN had been up and around until about a week before his death when he suffered a stroke.
Ada, one of the three daughters of Addison and Clarissa CLARKE BRIGHTMAN,
was born in Brookfield, N.Y., July 14, 1858. She was a direct descendant of colonial and revolutionary ancestors through the family line of BRIGHTMAN, CLARKE, DYE, SPENCER and GREENE. Her parents became pioneer settlers of Albion, Wis., when she was six years old. Her education was obtained in Milton college and the Whitewater normal where she specialized in music. She also studied under Prof. TITCOMB of Janesville and Prof. HEYER of Racine. She taught music in this part of Rock county for fifty years and, in three families, to three generations.
During her girlhood she became a member of the Rock River S.D.B. church, later
transferring her membership to the Milton Junction church. Until her death prohibited it, she was active in the church, the Ladies Aid society, the Fortnightly club, the W.C.T.U. and the W.R.C.
In 1885, she married J. C. PRYCE whose death in 1888 left her with two small
daughters, Claire and Leora, the latter now Mrs. C. A. MILLER of Oak Park, Ill. On Oct . 7, 1890, she married Mr. BUTEN.
George Washington BUTEN, the youngest of eight children of Frederick C. and
Bathsheba EDWARDS BUTEN, was born Oct. 7, 1859, in Milton. He was a constituent member of the Milton Junction S.D.B. church. Following his marriage to Ada PRYCE, they resided on a farm near Clear lake now owned by W. S. AGNEW.
A daughter Linda, now Mrs. W. W. COON of Walworth, was born to them. In
1899, the family moved to Milton Junction where Mr. and Mrs. BUTEN spent the rest of their lives and where, during their last years, Miss Claire PRYCE attended to their comfort.
Beside the daughters mentioned, there are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The late Mrs. Thomas SHARPE was a sister of Mrs. BUTEN. [Thursday edition, p. 1]
