- Harry E. THOMAS who had been in Mercy hospital since
July 9th when he suffered
- burns while pouring gasoline from one can into another, died
there Monday night. At the time the burns were not considered
serious, it being believed that he was suffering from shock and
exhaustion, but consequent complications proved fatal.
- Harry Ellsworth THOMAS, son of Randolph B. and Sylvia
COON THOMAS, was
- born January 12, 1875, at Albion. Here he grew to manhood.
He attended the district school, and went several terms to Albion
academy. He was baptized February 27, 1892, by Rev. E. A. Witter,
and joined the Albion Seventh Day Baptist church.
- On October 10, 1895, he was married to Edna B. WHITFORD
at Albion by Rev.
- E. A. WITTER. To them were born two daughters, Eloise,
at home, and Eunice, Mrs. Franklin WALSH, of Hebron, Ill.
- He is survived by his wife, his mother, his daughters, and
one sister, Bessie, Mrs. B. F.
- JOHANSON of Battle Creek, Mich. A sister, Florence,
preceded him in death on April 30, 1916.
- Mr. and Mrs. THOMAS lived many years in the village
of Albion, but moved later to
- a farm nearby, where they remained for seven years, during
which time Mr. THOMAS hauled milk for the creamery in
addition to farm work. Late in February of 1920 they moved to
Milton and took up residence on Madison avenue in the house built
by his grandfather Silas THOMAS. In the summer of 1920
Mr. THOMAS began work at the Burdick company, which he
continued until ill health forced his retirement May 5, 1942.
- Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock
in the Milton S.D.B.
- church with Rev. Carroll L. Hill officiating. Kenneth BABCOCK
sang two selections. Burial was in Milton cemetery, pallbearers
being Otto ZANZINGER, Elmer ANDERSON, David GREGORIE
[GREGOIRE], L. A. BABCOCK, Russell BURDICK
and Harvey BURDICK.
- Among the out of town relatives attending were Mrs. Sylvia
THOMAS and Dr. and
- Mrs. B. F. JOHANSON of Battle Creek, Mich. [Thursday

- Wilmer H[oward] CRANDALL, Milton, died unexpectedly
Monday at 9 a.m. while
- chatting with Ernest SHELLESTAD at the Milton Oil
company service station. When his wife left home on an errand
an hour earlier he was reading a morning paper and apparently
was in his usual health. Death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
- The son of Henry and Lucinda COTTRELL CRANDALL,
he was born in Milton
- Junction on Sept. 6, 1870, and went with his parents to Denison,
Ia., when he was very young. In 1880 the family moved to North
Loup, Neb., traveling by covered wagons. They lived there until
1891, when they moved to Farina, Ill.
- Following his graduation from the North Loup high school,
Mr. CRANDALL taught
- in that vicinity and also for one year in Mississippi.
He came to Milton about 1905 where he spent most of the remainder
of his life as a realtor.
- He was first married in October, 1893, to Ina BURDICK,
Farina, Ill., and two
- children, a son Howard, and a daughter, Audrey, were born
to them. [Wilmer and Ina separated. Ina took her two children
and went to Riverside, California.] He was again married on
Aug. 19, 1911, to Darl RISDON, Milton.
- Survivors are his wife; his son, Howard, South Gate, Calif.;
three daughters, Mrs.
- Audrey BABCOCK, Riverside, Calif., Mrs. Marjorie NELSON
and Mrs. Joan LAWTON, Milton Junction; three grandsons;
two brothers, Harry and Fred CRANDALL, Milton; and several
nieces and nephews. His sisters, Mrs. Maud HURLEY and
Mrs. Floyd COON, Riverside, Calif., preceded him in death
as did a brother and sister who died in infancy.
- Funeral services were held in the Fray and Albrecht funeral
home, Milton Junction,
- Wednesday afternoon, The Rev. Carroll L. Hill being assisted
by the Rev. Raymond Newell. Kenneth BABCOCK sang two selections.
Burial was in Milton cemetery with Homer GREEN, J. R.
DAVIDSON, A. M. PAUL, Chas H. ANDERSON,
Basil DUNWELL and Ernest SHELLESTAD acting as pallbearers.
Relatives and friends attended from California, Joliet, Ill.,
Whitewater, Albion, Edgerton and Janesville. [Thursday edition,

- At the home of her son, Bernard VAN HORN in Waukesha
on Monday, Aug. 9th,
- at 6 p.m. occurred the death of Mrs. Willard VAN HORN,
at the age of 70 years.
- Mrs. [Ruth Naomi] VAN HORN, a former resident of Milton,
had been ill since May
- 15th. She was born in Welton, Iowa, Nov. 20, 1872 to John
Black and Martha BABCOCK VAN HORN. On Nov. 20,
1896, she was married to Willard M. VAN HORN, Welton,
Iowa. For the past 20 years they have lived in and near Milton.
She is survived by her husband, two sons, Roland of Fort Worth,
Texas, and Bernard of Waukesha, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth
KNIGHT, Milton. One son and an infant daughter preceded
her in death.
- The funeral was held this Thursday afternoon in the Milton
S.D.B. church With Rev.
- Carroll L. Hill and Dr. Edwin Shaw officiating. Pallbearers
were Henry OCHS, Truman LIPPINCOTT, Rex BOWERS,
Wesley LOOFBORO, Orville HURLEY and Ed SEVERANCE.
- Out of town relatives who came for the funeral were Mr. and
Mrs. P. J. FURROW
- of Delmar, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Irel VAN HORN, Clinton,
Ia.; Mrs. Lucy VAN HORN and Mrs. Frank GREINROD
and daughter, Shirley Mae, Welton, Iowa. [Thursday edition,
