- John M. SEVERANCE, who fell
Nov. 5 and fractured bones in his right shoulder
- and hip, died early Saturday morning
in Edgerton Memorial hospital. Funeral services were held at
2 p.m. Sunday in the Milton S.D.B. church, Rev. Carroll L. Hill
officiating and being assisted by Rev. Elmo F. Randolph. Kenneth
A. BABCOCK sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "I
Need Thee Every Hour," with Mrs. Robert RANDOLPH
accompanist. Burial was in Milton cemetery, pallbearers being
L. A. BABCOCK, Frank HURLEY, Truman LIPPINCOTT,
Henry OCHS, Paul VAN HORN and Paul YAHNKE.
- Among the relatives attending were
Mr. and Mrs. Carl HANDTKE of Edgerton, Mr.
- and Mrs. Chester SEVERANCE of
Beloit, Mrs. Hattie SAUNDERS, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest SAUNDERS,
son William, Herbert SAUNDERS and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. SAUNDERS,
all of Albion.
- John Martin SEVERANCE was born
Sept. 4, 1845, in Warren county, Pennsylvania.
- The family came west while he was a
boy and settled at Dodge Center, Minn. He was married at the
age of 19 to Ruth HASKINS and they had four sons and four
daughters. Three of the sons survive: Ed C. of Milton, Herbert
G. of Hartford, S.D., and Leonard of Sioux Falls, S.D.
- Following the death of Ruth, he married
Arrilla CHAMBERS in 1903. After her
- death he went to Garwin, Iowa, to live
with his son Ed and there in 1918 he married Mrs. Phoebe BABCOCK.
She died and in 1922 he came to Milton and operated a grocery
store in the old Milton house a few years. Ed and family moved
here in 1923 and Mr. SEVERANCE has made his home with
him, the past two years in the Byron COON home.
- In honor of his 100th birthday, a family
picnic was held on Sept. 2 and his sons were
- here from South Dakota. Besides the
three sons, there are 12 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren
and 7 great great-grandchildren. [Thursday edition, p. 1]
